It was the first time that Helen heard those words from somebody else, but they were truer than most of the things people said to her.
Yes, she wanted to scream in response. It wasn’t her fault - it had never been her fault - but whoever had seen that side of her story but her? Helen was tired of it all. Tired of the rumors, tired of the violence, the insults she had to endure, not because of her choices, but because of the choices that had been implied upon her.
The sentence hit her hard, and for a second she was left speechless. ‘How-’, she meant to ask, but for a second her voice faded. ‘How could you know that?’, she inquired in confusion. ‘Why do you say so?’
