Valadis Lavellan, first of his clan, is due to be receiving his Vallaslin soon. But he still yearns to prove himself, and carries the urge to explore. When the clan camps in a place they don't usually venture, stories abound. The ruins looming over the camp combined with the odd tales pull at his adventurous streak and he ventures out, alone, biting off a little more than he can chew in the process.

2 for Val?

Inquisitor Val stayed on with the Inquisition as long as he could stand it, helping those displaced by the chaos, closing rifts whenever they appeared or were found. Doing what he could to set things as right as they would ever be again. Dorian had gone back to Tevinter a few years earlier and though they spoke as often as they could, it wasn’t the same as seeing his vhenan, being with him.

They’d found an old Eluvian in some ancient ruins. The mirror was coated with dirt and grime but in one piece and it still worked. Valadis paid good coin to have it sent to Minrathous and on the days they feel most alone, the elven Mage crosses the distance of leagues with a few words and a few steps.

01. What does your character’s name mean? Did you pick it for the symbolism, or did you just like the way it sounded?

Literally I picked Valadis because it sounded elfy at the time lol. So far as I’m aware it has no meaning.

02. What is one of your character’s biggest insecurities? Are they able to hide it easily or can others easily exploit this weakness?

He knows he acts childish sometimes and it makes him feel like he’s not really grown up, that people don’t see him as mature. He usually hides the feelings with a joke or by apologizing when he knows he’s done or said something immature. It’s not something that would really get to him but it would make him extremely embarrassed if someone drew attention to his childish moments.

13. What are your character’s sleeping habits? Heavy or light sleeper? Blanket stealer? One that always rolls onto the floor? Pushes their lover onto the floor? Sleep talker or walker?

Heavy sleeper, Val can usually sleep through the strongest storms. He probably steals blankets, but doesn’t move that much in his sleep so no floor for anyone (except when he falls out of bed in the morning). He’s been known to sleep talk, usually incoherent mumbling but occasionally broken sentences.

32. If your character’s lover offered to take them out on a dream date, what would they want to do?

Val’s a little cheesy. He’d love to have a picnic at sunset, somewhere in nature, like a forest or a field. They’d spend time talking, about nothing and everything, and stay long enough to lay back and watch the stars together, maybe fall asleep.

10 facts about dearest Valadis?

I feel like the ficlet I wrote for him didn’t give anyone outside the DA:RPG group an idea of his personality outside angsty moments, hope this changes that!

1. Val’s favorite flowers are daffodils and sweet pea but he likes any flowers that are brightly colored, especially pink ones.

2. When he was young, before he got his vallaslin, he realized he was attracted to the other young men of the clan and not the young women. A runaway city elf who had joined the clan convinced him to keep that a secret, especially after learning he was the clan’s first and would be expected to interact with shemlen and other clans who wouldn’t approve.

3. When he picked his vallaslin he chose Dirthamin, not because he liked or kept many secrets, but because he had realized secrets were never good to their keepers. It was the same time he came out to his parents and the clan. He wears the vallaslin as a reminder.

4. Val can’t cook to save his life. Everything he makes ends up some level of burnt, usually as charcoal and beyond recognition. Almost all is inedible.

5. He has a scar on his side from a deep gash he received while out looking for a Halla that had run away. Everyone is convinced the injury came from his falling out of a tree while trying to spot the animal. In truth he was attacked by a human hunter and didn’t want anyone to think he wasn’t capable of handling himself.

6. He actually likes some Orlesian fashions, especially the ones that include natural elements like vines and flowers. He tried to convince Josephine to base the Inquisition uniform for Halamshiral off of these designs even though they were almost a decade out of fashion.

7. He has a shirt made of plaidweave that he wears around Skyhold all the time. It took a lot of convincing from Josephine and Vivienne for him to not wear it when greeting nobles and judging prisoners, and even then Dorian’s was the voice of reason that finally convinced him to wear something else.

8. After he found the Ardent Blossom headgear he took it to Dagna so she could figure out how to work the same enchantments on another one he made entirely of roses. It was a gift for Dorian.

9. He can’t pronounce Corypheus correctly without stuttering over it a few times first. Once he referred to him only as “Cory-fish” for an entire conversation with no less than three Orlesian lords and two Fereldan teyrns.

10. Before going to the Enclave and joining the Inquisition he had one romantic relationship with a young man from another clan named Haleir. The clans had joined up when passing through unfriendly territory. The relationship ended when Haleir tried to convince Val to leave clan Lavellan for his own.
