#octoberhorrormoviechallenge 43: Bedlam I’m a bit melancholy about this one, as it’s the last of the horror productions by Val Lewton in the 1940s, which I’ve been (re)visiting to follow along with the Secret History of Hollywood podcast. This is more a drama with an edge of darkness than a straight horror, bit is still an excellent piece of work, on abuse of power, classism, treatment of the mentally ill, and a male need to dominate and hoard power. Great performances all round, especially from the always reliable Boris Karloff. It’s interesting that there’s a subplot about the Tories vs. Whigs, which does highlight how little things have changed with the former for about 260 years...
