Good day to you, fellow vampire fan, this message is for you!
I am currently in my last year of studying Media Production and I am writing my dissertation on the potential of the vampire as a figure of lgbtq representation. For this purpose, I am conducting a survey to read about your thoughts and feelings for the queer-coded vampire to see whether or not vampires have made positive impressions on the lives of their fans.
To complete the survey, please click the above link!
Important: you don’t have to identify as lgbtq to complete this survey! I am interested in the ways in which queer-coded vampires have affected the lives of all their fans!
To those who have seen my first post about this survey, it is now entirely anonymous - I will no longer be asking you to share your tumblr username.
I would like to say a massive thank you to those who have already expressed interest either by commenting on or liking my previous post or by messaging me, and another massive thank you to those who agreed to sharing this survey! So, in no particular order, thank you ♥♥:

In fiction, vampires are often depicted as the seducers. In reality, if you ask me to wear my fangs and bite you I WILL fall in love with you
Acceptable versus unacceptable: Vampires aren't human and they shouldn't be portrayed as such... or should they?
I'm probbably gonna get aloooooooooot of crap for this one and it's 3:30 so my sense of reason is gone, but you know, can we talk about two controversial vampire topics for a second?
Twilight and Diabolik Lovers, now firstly I am not going to compare the two in any way, I haven't watched DL and that wouldn't be fair to either even if I had, I also NOT GOING TO BASH so please read on
Why in the name of Dracula am I bringing this up? What could I POSSIBLY be doing? It's simply this, I want to know from your point of veiw, what is the difference between "abuse" and a vampire being a vampire? Why are some really violent things ok but some seemingly harmless things not? And I ask this because as a VAMPIRE FAN, not to mention a writer of vampires, I want to know where the line is being drawn, so here we have two COMPLETELY OPPOSITE ends of the spectrum and I'm going to point out a few things
Things in Twilight that people seem to have the biggest beef over besides the fact that the vampires sparkle:
-Edward comes through Bella's window at night and watches her sleep
-Bella goes into a severe depression when Edward leaves
-Bella is "alienated" from her other freinds and family *although I'll state later why this is, in fact, wrong, if you actually read/watched Twilight
-Edward is.... let's say "emotionally constipated" to a few degrees
I can't really think of any others that I see around all the time that SOLELY concern the Edward/Bella relationship (if you want to talk about the Volturi or werewolves or something then this isn't your post)
Things I've read about Diabolik Lovers that may or may not be causing a stir:
-One of the vampires actually refers to the female lead only as "Little Bitch" (and quite cheerfully might I add)
-Basically all of them have some sort of disturbed issue with their siblings and their mother
-Another mostly (or only?) calls the female lead "Flat Chested" as her name
-Another lit the village of his brother's best freind on fire just so that his brother wouldn't have his best freind
-Another stuffed his mother's ashes in a teddy bear and carries it around
-And another makes poisens in his spare time
I went through the DL tag out of curiosity- wich is why I decided to write this post- and ALOT of DL fans admit themselves "This is all kinds of messed up"/"All of these guys are really twisted"/"None of these relationships are healthy at all" and ok, trust me I get why it could be really appealing to watch, I myself really wanted to at first and I GET the appeal of watching something twisted for a fantastic storyline, I'm a HUGE fan of the "An American Horror Story" anthologies and NOTHING, not even wacko vampire brothers, can amount to the level of sick that that is but it has a really great story and you can almost get past the disturbance of it all so believe me when I say I DO NOT critcize DL fans, but with that said I pose a new question
On Tumblr, why is Twilight treated worse than the spawn of Satan, when Diabolik Lovers is, for the most part, largely anticipated/appreciated?
I want to know, it really bugs me when people say how horrible and unhealthy Twilight is but then out of the same mouth applaud something that's just as unhealthy- weather it's a book, a TV show, a video game, etc- and I want to point out a few things too
For those looking at my points above in defense of both series I have this to say:
-ALOT of supernatural creatures crawl through windows, it happens frequently on The Vampire Diaries, Teen Wolf, even Bleach, it's almost like an initiation thing for the supernatural, and let's not forget this is a common thing for teenagers too, and also, yes it may have been "creepy" for Edward to watch Bella sleep (and without her knowing about it it DEFINATELY is) but when she IS aware of it you need to keep in mind that Edward CAN'T sleep, it's .. fascinating to him
-I was pretty upset with this one too for a long time before my mom pointed something out to me: When someone is in love, especially a TEENAGER with all those raging hormones, and the person they're in love with leaves- especially out of the blue for no reason- you cannot honestly tell me that that wouldn't cause depression and someone who is PRONE to depression, as Bella seems to be, would sink really deeply into it, it was not some "oh look this is healthy" thing, it was a REALISTIC aspect of what was happening, just as realistic as Charlie wanting to blow Edward's head off, in real life, that happens all the time, it's just rarely covered that much in media because depression it's self is RARELY COVERED IN MEDIA, and that's TRUE, now do we all have mental break downs in the woods? No, but if Bella was already prone to depression or anxiety I see how she could be, let me tell you something a little personal, I am currently overcoming panic anxiety and you know what? I used to have breakdowns over really stupid things that nearly caused panic attacks, if someone who I was in love with left me in the woods for no apparent reason I probbably would have had the same exact reaction, maybe the question shouldn't be why she broke down, but if she had an underlying reason to, and as much as everyone calls Bella's charector "Depressive" and "flat" don't you think there might be a reason for that? Like maybe she legitamately is prone to depression?
-Bella was never alienated by the Cullens, they ENCOURAGED her to spend time with her family, her freinds, even the werewolves who they at first hated, because they wanted her to have a normal life, and even after becoming a vampire- wich Edward was AGAINST vehemently- she STILL saw Charlie and spoke to her mother over the phone (not sure if the phone was in the movies but it was mentioned in the book) so she was not "alienated", she was never social to begin with, remember in the beginning of the very first Twilight installment how awkward she was with everyone she met and how she didn't really want to socialize? ...Why would that have changed all of a sudden?
-I dare you to find one single vampire series - especially romantic- where the vampires AREN'T emotionally constipated atleast in the beginning- The Vampire Diaries, Dracula Everlasting, Vampire Knight, and Diabolik Lovers it's self all represent this, some more than others, and that's off the top of my head
-In Diabolik Lovers, let me point out THIS ABSOLUTELY MAGNIFICENT POST http://yolktuba.tumblr.com/post/61566731274/buchaiku-i-think-people-went-into-dialovers about these paticular vampires
-To add to that, wile their actions may not be right or in any way a good thing, they were brought up with a REALLY messed up mother and a HORRIBLE family life as an entirety, cake being a vampire onto that mess (I feel I'll get the details wrong so please Google it if you want more in depth accounts of what they went through) I would've likely gone insane too
I'm not going to say that either of these things is definately healthy but what vampire relationship IS definately healthy? There's a 99% chance they've killed someone at one point and oh I'd say an 80% chance they're going to suck their lover's blood, that isn't Dr. Phil healthy no matter how you spin it so I want to know why some vampire relationships are so harshly criticized and others aren't?
Is it because with DL you KNOW you're getting into a mess of sociopaths so you don't really have a right to complain if you keep watching it? (although alot of DL fans have said some people thought it'd be a fluffy anime)
Is it because Twilight is advertized as romance and aimed at a teenage audience and DL isn't? (I don't know if it is or not but it's a theory)
Is it because the relationships in Twilight are portrayed as "ideal" and the ones in DL are portrayed purpously as twisted?
WHAT is the determining factor?
And what about the in-between? What about some of the other vampire series, some great, some not, some in between, that are loved or hated but have their own varying degrees of health and insanity? The Vampire Diaries, Dracula Everlasting, True Blood, Vampire Knight, Chibi Vampire, Rosario + Vampire, Vampire Princess Miyu, to name a few, none of these portray vampires as monsters just for being vampires, if there's a vampire monster it's the PERSON, so where is the line drawn, with a vampire, on what's "healthy", what's "unhealthy", and what's just sexy psychopathy?
There's a saying that goes "there's no such thing as safe sex with a werewolf", and I think there should be a vampire equivalent to that
Again I LOVE vampires, I write about vampires, and I may very well at some point watch Diabolik Lovers depending on how close the anime sticks to the games (if it sticks heavily to the games... don't count on it..) but I just feel like there's some hypocrisy here in the vampire world and it needs a stake driven through it, and again I'm not being a sarcastic moron over this, I want genuine answers, and if you're wondering why I pointed out more about Twilight than DL, it isn't because I'm a Twilight fan (even though I am) it's because Twilight seems to get nothing but hate on Tumblr, and people don't really seem to have an issue with DL so I figured since people aren't bashing it there isn't much to cover except to use as an example
Also this is just one great reason I personally prefer werewolves as husbands I mean come on think of the mating theory with that
