Interview with Author Richard Lee Byers

Best known for writing the Vampire’s Apprentice and in the Dungeons and Dragons Forgotten Realms series, he also has written prose for Marvel’s X-men novels.

What is it like writing in a pre-existing world like Forgotten Realms?

Richard Lee Byers: The most fundamental thing I can say is that it's like writing historical fiction. If I were writing a western, I wouldn’t be free to deviate from what the facts were of living in the old west. When I am writing forgotten realms, I can't stray from what has been established about life in the forgotten realms. That’s the most basic thing. You can't trash the setting. It has to endure beyond your particular story so that other people can use it. The company needs to continue to make money off of it and all that kind of good stuff. Continue reading

When I was a preschooler in rural Indiana, I dearly loved talking with my grandmother.  Mom worked nights as a waitress at a 24 hour truck stop and often slept during the day.  This left my brother and me to entertain ourselves.  One form of entertainment was to call Grandma.  Nothing to it!  One of us picked up the phone and told the operator, “I want to talk to my Grandma”.  The operator knew who we were and who Grandma was and she connected us.   Continue reading

What comes to mind when you hear the term “GOAT” in the world of sports? When considering the “Greatest Of All Time (GOAT)”, you may think of a player like Michael Jordan. Another GOAT in the NFL might be Joe Montana, Jim Brown or Jerry Rice. Baseball GOATs often involve players like Joe DiMaggio, Nolan Ryan and Ty Cobb.  However, these are all examples of individual GOATs. What about a different kind of GOAT? How about the “Greatest Of All Teams?” You might say that this kind of GOAT in the NFL is a team like the Pittsburgh Steelers and their six NFL championships. Continue reading
