I was like... there's a metaphor here that I'm can't articulate about Santiago asking the woman to pick only women. As opposed to just any human and their lives being worth less than the things Sam was picking up off the floor. But then I was like oh! These vamps are 'straight' (there's no such thing). 🤠

Plus I think the child being there, with mother, sister... screams 'women are roles for others'. And stuff on that has been said ad nauseum. so.

Also the think the show made the realistic choice. Like, sure, there are people like this who wouldn't hesitate to give up their life for a stranger, but they're one in a million. And most of us are selfish animals (not in a bad way, humans are just like that I think) that are scared shitless of death and would also pick anyone Santiago would point at to die instead of us.
