Pondering my Blush Blush/Crush Crush Hunger Games AU

Looooong post ahead, basic knowledge of the Hunger Games franchise is recommended!!

(I'm NOT an expert; I haven't read the books/seen the movies in a hot minute, nor have I played through all of Crush Crush -- also note that this is a work in progress)

In canon, only one girl and one boy are Reaped from each District -- in this AU, two people are Reaped from each District without regard for their gender, and anyone identifying outside of the gender binary will be treated as such. This also means that a girl may Volunteer for a boy, or vice versa. (<- Implementing this change just to make up for the disproportionate ratio of CC/BB characters)

In case anyone notices that the Victor's ages seem like they don't really match up with that timeline -- the Reaping takes place on July 4 so I had to account for whether their birthdays came before/after that day aaaargh

Trivia:

The Valentine sisters are practically famous for their victories. They use their wealth gained from the Games to help the people of their district and keep their black market up and running.

District 11 has the highest armed Peacekeeper presence, mostly to monitor its residents and ensure they don't keep any of the crops for themselves, and to monitor the Valentine Sisters and their cousins (Peanut and Cashew) -- even the most minor offenses are punishable by public execution.

Cole hid it well, but he was LIVID that he got Reaped when he did. Only children from the ages 12 - 18 are eligible for the Games, so if he survived the Reaping just this one more time, he never would've had to worry about the Games again.

^ Cole is one of the most popular Tributes/Victors amongst the Capitol audience for his intelligence and charisma. Those in the Districts are more skeptical of him, since District 2 is close with the Capitol and they wonder if he'll eventually be used as a mouthpiece for them.

^^ Cole was one of many tributes seen as "desirable" within the Capitol and thus became a target of potential trafficking, wherein he would be forced to sell his body to the highest bidder, or else his loved ones would be killed. So far, Cole has managed to stall this process.

The Valentine Sisters were also subjected to this pressure, as was Shibuki, Volks, Kelby, Sawyer, and Scale,

It's theorised that Nina bartered with the overseer of her District's Reaping procedure to ensure that she got chosen instead of Anon, as he was caught with contraband earlier that year, and consequently the Capitol would have rigged his name into the upcoming pool of Tributes.

There were notable tensions between Dorian Reed and his Capitol Escort, Fuyu. Despite their mutual attempts to maintain appearances in front of the cameras, it was clear they did not get along. Dorian's performance and subsequent victory in the arena was a disturbing sight to behold, and people wonder how Fuyu might've contributed to this.

^ No one else knows, but Dorian's heinous display and utter brutality in his Games was what drove Fuyu into further disillusionment, and led him to quietly join the Rebels as an important set of insider eyes.

Despite the Hunger Games serving as a reminder of the Dark Days (the uprising of the Districts against the Capitol which led to the Games' creation) -- bringing up the names QPernikiss, Natsu, and Itharion will very likely result in punishment.

Lake was taken and turned into an Avox for her "degenerate art" that was Anti-Hunger-Games and therefore Anti-Capitol in nature, thereby deemed an act of treason. She was dragged away from District 4 at sixteen years old. By far she's the most "obedient" Avox due to the threat of having her hands cut off if she dared to pick up any kind of artistic implement again, whether it was a fountain pen or a stick of charcoal.

Nova was captured from District 6 by the Capitol and turned into an Avox from repeated misdemeanours that involved graffiti, sneaking into prohibited areas, and backtalking Peacekeepers, even after two "warnings" where she was shot in the arm and leg after being caught sneaking over an electric fence past curfew.

Felix was turned into an Avox the moment he publicly questioned/defied the Capitol's ideology and the Hunger Games as a whole -- he was confident that the people of District 12 would back him up, but he stood alone.

Poe was turned into an Avox because of his repeated attempts to access forbidden literature through District 8's black market. Like the other Avoxes, he can now only communicate through timid nodding or hand gestures -- although occasionally, the people he serves might be kind enough to lend him a journal or scrap of paper to convey his thoughts or write poems.

^ Whenever he's caught, he's dragged into a room of Jabberjays (genetically-engineered birds that mimic human speech) and forced to listen to them rewind his cries and wails from his torture for an hour. This is likely the same punishment for other Avoxes.

╰─•𖣂•─ update: well. Now that the world is more developed, I kind of feel more "assured" in my idea to commit to this. I'll do my best to handle the topic with grace.

The idea of Vanna, Bonnibel, and a Blush Blush guy being a "Trio" is so funny to me because Vanna's only other (guy) friends consist of -- Poe, Cole, and Seth

And all of those three Guys are like. Very different.

Vannabel + Poe would be sooo draining for Poe. He can handle 1 Vanna because she's relatively low-energy despite her overall "bright" disposition, but Vanna + her energetic girlfriend would simply deplete his energy when they're in a lovey-dovey mood and he's like "?? Guys I'm still here?" -- I DO think he'd still like their company. Maybe if it was just Vanna+Poe or Bonnibel+Poe, his social battery can manage a little longer. Vanna and Poe already get along because they're writer/poet buddies, and Bonnibel has some differing views on the world that I think Poe would be interested to hear. I think if it was Vannabel on a normal day + Poe then things would be all fine and dandy!! It's one of those things where the other people are carrying the interaction, so you're allowed to zone out and go nonverbal without actually BEING left out yk? He adds a little flavour to their colourful lives, and they add a little sparkle to his! Also this means free desserts are occasionally delivered to his door. Just having a free late-night Sweet Treat can do wonders for morale and inspiration when you're a jaded uni student.

Vannabel + Cole would be comedic methinks... because Bonnibel and Cole are both smooth-talkers so their arguments would feel like something you'd see in theatre or an improv class. Cole would have Bonnibel going "not this guy again..." when he walks into the bakery -- their conversations at the beginning of their "friendship" are just Cole going "Can I borrow your girlfriend for something completely normal and safe? :)" and Bonnibel going "??? Absolutely not, she and I made plans later tonight" -- and Cole would still find a way to shove a screwdriver or bolt cutters into Vanna's hands and put her in a Situation. Bonnibel is over here trying to be nice while asking Vanna "So um. What's the deal with your twitchy friend over here?" And Vanna, being Vanna, doesn't see a single red flag in Cole so she's like, "Oh him? He found someone he likes!! I'm sure he just gets a little nervous sometimes, so I leave him be :))" -- and meanwhile Cole is doing the Absolute Most to troll/murder his Marshmallow's other suitors while Vannabel is like. Having tea together or something.

Vannabel + Seth is just... wtf. One of you is VERY out of place in this trio. You have 2 wholesome gfs and then there's a clairvoyant demon prince who revels in mortal sin and has no qualms about putting lives in danger for his own enrichment -- although I like this one just for the opportunity to explore Vanna's background because. She's kind of a self-insert atp so I gave her the same-ish backstory as me irl. And with Seth being Seth, he just. Knows what happened to her/what she's done in the past and he's like, "Hm. Interesting. You still seem determined to be a Good Person or whatever you think that means, so I'll stick around to see how you turn out." -- and he kind of plays an "observer" role while watching Bonnibel being a supportive gf and Vanna trying her best to keep her head above water. Sometimes he'd try to egg her on aswell, like if Vanna was having a bad day then Seth would attempt (half-heartedly) to play into her vulnerabilities and turn her against people. Ofc Vanna is determined to Not let that happen, but she still wants Seth around and never tells him to stop (a character flaw with her tbh; her occasional inability to set boundaries due to her affections). And if the day comes when she goes through a particularly bad spiral, Bonnibel would lock in and go full Protection Mode -- which ofc mainly consists of being there for Vanna, but also marching up to Seth and telling him: "Your 'devil on the shoulder' act is NOT cute right now. Either go kick rocks, or put on your big-boy boots and be an actual friend for once" -- and then Seth would have to confront the fact that he does indeed care about Vanna.

Hm. Something to think about.

i want to write a Vannabel fic too but alas, I don't know much about Crush Crush :') the main characters in the fic would be a GIRL and a CC CHARACTER and yet it would probably still be a BB fic.

UNLESS of course I do my AU of The Little Mermaid with Vanna and Bonchovy (except I am Not calling her that) -- which then all will be fine and lovely

Vanna and Bonnibel

Unproblematic girlfriends. Bonnibel has a particular type and Vanna loosely fits her criteria. It's implied that Bonnibel likes people with a sharp tongue -- which Vanna absolutely does not have. But that doesn't matter because Vanna gives her cuteness aggression and Bonni wants to keep her safe and well-fed. Especially because of. Because of Vanna's backstory.

Vanna and Cole

Vanna is an author who actually writes some pretty dark stuff, and Cole was one of her readers. When they met, Cole was like. "Wow, THIS person wrote all that??" -- and he was very slightly impressed, which was how he decided to befriend her in the first place just For Science. He's also tired of Vanna's naïvety and repeatedly warns her that someone (cough) might try to take advantage of that. To some degree, he DOES genuinely care about Vanna, as her friend, but of course, no one will ever come before His Beloved Marshmallow.

Bonnibel and Cole

This one is special to me,, It's Smooth Talker vs Smooth Talker. They have this weird "thing" happening where Bonnibel is simply trying to spend time with her girlfriend, Vanna, while Cole is trying to pull a "Whatever. Go, my scarab" and send Vanna on dubious missions to sabotage the other Guys for his Marshmallow. Of course Cole could just do it himself, but it's oddly entertaining having someone so naïve just. Go along with whatever he asks. Bonnibel is always exasperated and Cole is like. "Heh :)" -- but in truth, I really don't think they mind each other. I think Cole might lean more towards the "indifferent" side when it comes to Bonni but I'll leave him on "neutral" simply because they interact often enough for there to be SOME kind of potential acquaintanceship happening. Even if it's like, weird.

Vanna and Ayeka

Since Vanna is friends with Cole, she'd want to get along with Ayeka! I think Ayeka might be weirded out by her though. Vanna isn't pushy by any means, but like. WHO is this girl and why is she talking to me?

Bonnibel and Ayeka

Bonnibel doesn't meet Ayeka's Marshmallow in this universe, so there's not much of a reason for Ayeka to have beef with her? I guess?

Vanna and Volks

In Volks' eyes, Vanna is "the delivery girl" since she's always bringing pies over from Bonnibel's bakery as per His Marshmallow's orders. He's kind of concerned just because of how forgetful and naïve Vanna can be. Beyond that, there's nothing there.

Vanna and Kyoko

They attend the same university, so they meet very occasionally!! Kyoko is like, mildly worried for Vanna because, again, of how forgetful and naïve she can be. It kind of tugs at Kyoko's heart but also, she doesn't want to treat Vanna like a baby.

Vanna and Seth

Given that Seth is Seth, he has SOME semblance of clairvoyance and thus clocked (the pivotal parts of) Vanna's entire life immediately. Which then made him look at her and go "??? How did YOU survive this long?" -- and just for fun, he chose to befriend her to continue watching the way she fumbles through life. He's amused by Vanna but also respects her for making it this far, with her being who she is.
