today we've got the varied tit, a cheerful and energetic critter localized to Japan, the Korean penninsula, and a tiny scrap of northeast China. ordinarily a lowland forest dweller, but doesn't mind humans as much as it maybe should. it's thus a frequent visitor of backyard bird feeders, gardens, and parks, especially when winter hits and food becomes scarce. they're also often found to use nest boxes in place of their regular tree cavities. their nests are structurally formed of moss, lined with any soft material they can find. depending on where they've made their home, this can be anything from fur to fine plant material or human-made textile scraps.

sexually monomorphic, but divided into several subspecies - owing, no doubt, to the fact that much of their range is separated by stretches of ocean! further south, these birds tend darker in coloration, primarily in the tone of the brown on their face. juveniles are much drabber than adults. they exhibit caching behavior, stashing seeds in the woods in case of emergency. birds with better memories have been seen pulling from caches to feed their chicks months after their original storage. in areas with less attentive birds, however, sometimes random patches of sunflowers will start growing in the middle of the forest for some odd reason…
