hello, white female 2017er here. I'm relatively new to the concept of cultural appropriation, and I'm wondering about religion. I was raised in a Jewish/Buddhist houshold (my mom Jewish, my dad a practicing Buddhist and coordinator for our local meditation center). Personally, I have attended a meditation retreat for 5 years, and it has really shaped me. However, buddhism is an eastern religion, originally. Is practicing it appropriation? Is using pali/tibetan words like namaste and metta?
Well, I am not an authority on what is and is not cultural appropriation, but my opinion on this is as follows.
If you are doing something that you know people might take offense to, then thats a problem. If someone feels as though you are appropriating their culture, in that instance, I’d advise you to hear them out and acknowledging the privileged space in which you practice your religion/spirituality.
The thing about cultural appropriation is the lack of respect, the tendency to flatten an entire culture in the name of whiteness, of simplicity, of dress-up games, etc.
I think there’s a difference between claiming a buddhist spirituality w/o any respect for or knowledge of its origins and growing up with its values and its history and knowing that you are a white and privileged foreigner to that spirituality.
The core of it I suppose is that you can go on living your life as a conscious Buddhist and should check your privilege all day, every day.
If anything that I’ve written here is problematic, followers, please feel free to comment or shoot me a message. XX signing out.
