It’s pretty crazy that I only have a month left here. I’m ready for the semester to end but I’m not ready to leave my new friends.
Camel riding and lunch by the Persian Gulf
The outdoor adventure club took its first trip this weekend and I was lucky enough to go. We camped in the desert, Zekreet to be exactly. It's known mostly for the Richard Serra sculptures that stick out from the flatness of the landscape. Our only issue was the wind that blew sand everywhere. It was comparable to Chicago's winter winds, but sand doesn't melt away. Due to extreme winds today, we cut the trip short and missed rock climbing and going to the bay. On the bright side, I made some more friends who are great cooks.
Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar is a center of excellence for education and research in art and design. VCUQatar offers BFA programs in graphic design, interior design, fashion design, painting & printmaking, a BA in art history and an MFA in design.
One of my professors submitted a piece to the World of Wearable art competition, and won a few awards.
The book store here gave me an early birthday gift, 16 to be extact. Some of the required textbooks for my classes this semester were given to the students last semester so the woman who works there decided to give us some comparable ones, AND MORE! (Students here pay a book fee so they don’t buy individual textbooks, so this was an extra nice gesture) She graduated from the fashion program so she had some personal experience with some of these. I’m most excited about the books on knitwear and menswear, which is something from Richmond that I’ll be missing out on here in Doha. We also got a Fashionary, which is a sketchbook with outlines of figures on the pages plus some spec sheets, a calendar, standard measurement tables, care label info, and more! BONUS: I also received the patternmaking book we were required to get sophomore year but I never bought because it was too expensive.
First Impressions
Today was the first day of classes, so I’m gonna go through some of my first impressions.
Everybody is so nice and accommodating. Like, all the students and staff have been really welcoming and it’s great.
The facilities are great and rival those at our main campus.
THERE IS A COFFEE SHOP IN THE BUILDING!!! #BLESSED
It’s really hard to find places that will accept my Discover card, not very convenient.
I bought what I thought was milk at the market yesterday, but when I put it in my cereal this morning it was thick and tangy. Turns out I bought buttermilk and there was nothing indicating that on the label.
The architecture has me in a constant state of amazement.
Overall, I’m super excited to go to my fashion classes tomorrow. Tomorrow will also be my first day wearing a skirt in Qatar, but it’s a midi so it shouldn’t be an issue.
