When talking about veganism you can get dragged all over the place in arguments. You can be talking about nutrition one minute, then explaining why “free range” isn’t exactly free range, and then debating animal testing or hunting. What is far better than creating a big, complex picture of why these individual arguments fail in practice, going into detail, is understanding the fundamental logical reason why all these arguments fail. And that reason is that the justification we give for killing and eating animals would be rejected in other contexts, so it creates a double standard. The “name the trait” filter can help catch moral inconsistencies in intellectually honest arguments.
Name a difference between humans and animals that justifies the difference in treatment.
Some examples:
“They aren’t as intelligent as us” - would you give up your right to life if you were less intelligent?
“They don’t look like us” - if you looked different to another group, would that group be justified in killing you?
“They don’t have moral agency / the ability to reason” - if you were mentally disabled or a child with no moral agency, would it be justified to kill you?
“Humans created civilization” - if humans lacked civilization, would it be okay to kill them without justification? Is it morally justified to kill isolated tribespeople?
“It’s part of our culture / its natural” - if it were part of our culture to kill humans needlessly would this make it ethical? It’s natural to kill humans, does that make it ethical?
“They’re animals and we’re humans” is simply not the difference and this question is meant to point out where most people violate the 2nd law of logic in terms of veganism - the law of noncontradiction.
This line of logic follows from the fundamental golden rule - treat others the way you would like to be treated.
Animals and humans are both sentient. They both have conscious awareness, and can feel pain and suffering. That is the common relevant trait used to determine moral value. Morality, as a social agreement, must be applied consistently unless you do not value human life and are okay with someone applying it inconsistently to you or your loved ones.
