Velocity Weapon by Megan O'Keefe. A chonky space opera focused on siblings Sanda and Biran Greeve as they navigate a conflict between Ada Prime and the secessionist Icarion. O'Keefe knows how to pace a book, and the plot never sags even as it explores themes of autonomy and betrayal. I love Sanda so much I'm going to make this joke for the third time: Sanda Greeve is here to kick ass and eat toasted protein, and she's all out of protein.

I read it and loved it! Random flailing under the cut! With spoilers!

Okay Sandra clonking Thomas when she wanted to kiss him was hilarious. Sandra can grieve a lost leg, a lost people, while keeping her hands busy and her mind occupied. Tell the hot man she wants to fuck him? All of a sudden she turns into a fumbling jock. Useless. No words, some aggressive bad touch that gets her rightfully thrown on her ass. Oh how the mighty have fallen.

Idk what Thomas' deal was! I wanna know everything from his point of view! He and Sandra never had time to sit and talk through much. He probably fell mostly in love with her before he actually met her, but like, I would love some Thomas point of view. Will probably do another read just to glean whatever he says. I'm a bit spoiled with fanfic, I forgot that actual books make you pay attention to that one paragraph that holds the keys to the kingdom. I've been reading while half asleep, I probably missed something.

I love love love how the characters are expected to keep up with a conversation tho. The Keepers see what's happening, process their emotions, and then very quickly decide on a course of action. It's something that I always appreciate in a colleague when I see it. It's something that I've been told is creepy about me by colleagues. Idk, these people felt more real to me than some of the people I've tried to talk with lately.

The bad guy showing up to give Sandra her leg! I was like "Hold up, why is this guy here in this room giving her a prosthetic. He has shit to do. Why is the author telling us that this didn't come from Biran, that it came from the Protectorate. Like, I knew it was from the Protectorate, but why is the author making a big deal about it?" and now I'm realizing some beta reader/editor was like "If you don't say it then people are going to be upset when the cool shiny leg is taken out from under Sandra" which, fair.

Thomas, where did you come from where are you going where was your home planet how lonely were you before you found this insane, one in a billion woman and why do you not have an entire spy network to whisk her away to? Why is Graham picking her up in a cargo shuttle instead of your spy buddies? Where is the rest of your organization, and how much do you/don't you owe them???? Thomas you are a giant pile of plot threads waiting to show up in the second book.
