In the herbaceous borders at Waterperry Garden, Oxfordshire, the upright clumps of Veronicastrum virginicum 'Lavendelturm' (Culver's root) were covered in spires of small, soft lilac flowers. The lower part of the stems have whorls of long, pointed leaves. These plants need constant moisture and wilt quickly in dry soil conditions.

August Garden

It has been a while since I had a wander in the garden with camera in hand. I guess this is mostly because it seemed that little had changed; just lots more of the same, and so it seemed less than worthwhile. But, in a moment of boredom, I went out and took more pictures of some of the same plants like the osteospermum that are thriving in the sunny weather. Then I noticed how worthwhile it is to look closer and took a few pictures of some of the hydrangeas and the veronicastrum, which attracts bees almost as well as the lavender. Finally the eucomis which certainly deserves a closer look.

Most time of course is taken with the vegetable and fruit gardens. So much bounty and we are never sure exactly what to do with it all. Often picking so much that the possibility of eating everything is a scary prospect. The answer of course is to give it away. Neighbours and visiting family have therefore had the dubious pleasure of vast quantities of runner beans, courgettes and tomatoes.

The flowering herbaceous perennials in these large island beds seem like giant brushstrokes of paint on the landscape. The red-orange of Helenium 'Moerheim Beauty' (sneezeweed), the pink of Veronicastrum virginicum 'Fascination' (Culver's root) and the yet to fully open Hylotelephium (sedum, stonecrop) flowers with the purple of Salvia nemorosa 'Caradonna' (Balkan clary).

Creating a great plant association as they flowered next to each other were Veronicastrum virginicum 'Lavendelturm' (culver's root) and Phlox paniculata 'Blue Evening'. The flowers have a very different shape, texture and intensity of colour. The Veronicastrum virginicum 'Lavendelturm' is a tall herbaceous perennial reaching up to 2m, whilst Phlox paniculata 'Blue Evening' is an upright grower reaching nearly 1m. The Phlox flowers are fragrant and appear bluer in evening light.

Providing a supply of nectar for the bees in July is Veronicastrum virginicum ‘Fascination' (Culver's root). This upright herbaceous perennial grows up to 1.2m tall, with whorls of leaves and spikes of small light violet-pink flowers which are often fasciated. On the free draining sandy soil of the Royal Horticultural Society Garden Wisley, UK, in the hot summer these plants are being irrigated as they thrive in humus-rich, moist soil in full sun or partial shade.

Spotted this Veronicastrum ‘Red Arrows’ (Culver’s Root) yesterday as today’s #oneadayplant. . I like Veronicastrum for their light hand at being big lumps. Delicate and dainty, while also clumsy and blobbish. . Commonly you see the variety ‘Fascination’, which is a decent grower and designers now are most focused on the white flowered form of ‘Album’. They are all pretty good. One thing to not though is that they all tend to be lilac is some way or another. The pinks are lilac-pinks, the red (really never red in any sense of the word) lilac- reds. Even the white is a bluish-white. Don’t expect radical colours and you won’t be disappointed. . Slow to established, then quick to bulk up. An expensive plant relative to others that you will buy as they sulk when propagated and take a while to get to any size. Worth growing though if you have the space.
