CRACKING MY KNUCKLES you don't even know what you just started. Vex and Allay are technically the same. The only distinction between them is where they derive their magic from, and that is what gives them the behavioral and physiological differences.
Vex are sort of like the fae, with how I view them. You can make deals with them for power, but oftentimes it comes with a greater cost than the reward you get. The Vex are very open to making deals with mortals but they will look for any loophole to make it so they can take advantage of you. When making deals with the Vex, you have to be very particular with your wording in order to make sure you don't get a shitty end in the deal. Once you make a deal with the Vex, you are now in a life-long arrangement with them. They'll always follow you wherever you go, even if at a distance. They require offerings frequently in order to stay satiated so they don't try and gain respect or fear from you with more violent means. They like blood, flowers, food, and crystals as safe offerings. They do have to be particular ones, though, as the Vex will interpret some of these as signs of aggression depending on what they are. If you were to give a Vex a petunia, they would most likely hunt you down or bring great misfortune. They would see that as an act of aggression rather than something cordial. While contrarily, if you were to give them a sunflower, they would be very pleased and leave you alone. Perhaps even give you a slight bout of luck and power. The reason why the Vex care about things like these is because it brings them power. They gain power through making deals and consumption of blood. They gain power through the energy of fear and negativity they can give others.
For the Allay, though, they all start as a Vex. What makes them turn into an Allay is deriving their power through more positive means instead. The culture amongst Allay is far different than the one amongst Vex. They're much more tight-knit as there is far less of them, and they are stronger in numbers. Vex and Allay have a neutral-leaning-negative stance on each other. It is not uncommon for Vex to attack Allay because they see them as weaker creatures. Allay also make deals with others, but this emerges in the form of acts of service on their end. It does result in less magic gain than what the Vex do, but with a good relationship to who they work for, Allay can be just as strong as Vex. Allay thrive on the positivity and happiness they bring others. They also appreciate gifts, although they are just as picky as the Vex when it comes to them. The same rules as gifting a Vex apply to Allay. Although, if you were to disrespect an Allay, they're more likely to merely leave you rather than attack you. A mistreated Allay can and will attack if need be, though, often resulting in a downward spiral that leads to them reverting back into a Vex. It is important to treat an Allay with respect, it's just basic decency.
Allay will bring about good fortune if you keep them around. Bring them mining and you'll feel an odd compulsion to mine in a direction that just so happens to be towards just what you're looking for. Bring them adventuring and you'll find good loot, bring them in a boat and you'll stumble upon a sniffer or shipwreck. They're magnets for good but most don't realize this. Which is what results in people making deals with Vex instead. They know of the power that Vex can bring, while most see Allay as just a cleaning service for their items. An Allay's transformation into what they are is a long and difficult process. Their methods of gaining magical energy and power is unconventional for their species, which makes it difficult to exist as they do until they figure themselves out. A natural Allay transformation usually occurs when a Vex diverges from the rest of their siblings in an act of rebellion. Then they find community amongst other Allay, and pick up their lifestyle instead.
Alternatively, an Allay could in theory be artificially created and commonly is amongst Pillagers and Evokers. They will separate a Vex from the rest of their siblings and feed them through positivity rather than putting them to work as summonable minions when intruders engage with them. Despite being summonables to Evokers, the relationship between a Vex and Evoker can have quite a lot of variation! An Evoker can own a Vex, a Vex can own an Evoker, and they could have a more mutual relationship aswell. It all depends on how they find each other and what works for them. Most of the time, though, Evokers do own their Vex. Allay are just put to work by Pillagers and Evokers to pick up and gather items for them and they are given affection and gifts as a reward.
Think of Vex akin to a guard dog for them, while Allay are more like well trained house cats.
Both Allay and Vex enjoy music and dancing. It is more common amongst Allay due to their lifestyle and culture, but both groups do partake in it. Those affiliated with Vex and Allay could put on grand displays of musical performances to be put in good favor with them. Some even worship them like a deity, and those people oftentimes have festivals in their honor. " NOW!! FOR MY FAVORITE PART!!! THE AFFECTS OF VEX MAGIC CONSUMPTION IN MORTALS!!!! One could harvest the magic of a Vex in physical form through a variety of ways. The most common one is slaying a Vex. Their entire form is just magical energy, and consuming that before it dissipates will give their magic to you. Another way is consuming left behind magic the Vex will leave after attacks or if they're staying in one place for too long. There is a blueish-grey tinge wherever a Vex goes, and scraping it off or licking it off can have similar affects (although, it is arguably considerably more gross to do that instead of just killing one of them) Vex magic will have very noticeable differences on a person. Consuming it will make your heartrate increase, you'll feel like a rat in a cage. Blue will cover your extremities and your ears will sharpen. Magical wings can sprout from your back, although they are almost entirely non-functional besides being able to glide in some cases. You will have a considerable amount of larger physical strength and aggression. An uncontrolled man with Vex magic is not a good one, and it takes a lot of willpower to not become an aggressive beast once you've been affected by it. Ordinarily, these affects are temporary. But while they are in affect, if you lead the lifestyle of a Vex that feeds the magic, they will be retained.
Vex can also curse people with their magic. The effects of Vex magic on a person usually results in a death from their own doing within a short period of time after it has taken affect, so Vex can sometimes curse those who have wronged them with it. Or, if the Vex feel their disciples aren't doing good enough, they will curse them with Vex magic in an attempt to make them preform better. THAT IS....MOST OF MY HEADCANNONS.......
