“Farmers With Guns Await ‘Killer-Dog’,” Toronto Star. October 7, 1931. Page 01. ----- Believe Animal Responsible for Wholesale Slaughter of Sheep ---- Newcastle, Oct. 7. - Farmers of Newcastle-Orono district are on armed guard ready to destroy a police dog which is alleged to have killed 27 sheep in this section within the past ten days. One farmer lay in wait all night in a railroad siding shark waiting fro the dog’s attack on his herd.

‘No action is being taken by the township council,’ Wellington Barrow, who lost three sheep, told The Star. ‘The township indemnities the farmer by paying one to eight dollars for each sheep lost, but has taken no siege to destroy the dog. Farmers are individually on guard against the killer, but are not out in groups.’

Of the 27 sheep destroyed, Charles Eddy lost eight, Mammon Andrews last four, Wellington Barow, three, George Cowan; William Cowan; Alvin Graham, two, and William Hayes.

No report of the killings has been made to the police. Provincial Constable W. E. Smith, Bowmanville told The Star.
