Squeeze - Vicky Verky (1980)
I just realized something.
Squeeze's two songs, "Up the Junction" and "Vicky Verky" both tell the story of a young couple (probably teenage) who get pregnant. In the former, they keep the child and work to support her, and are eventually driven apart by the guy's drinking and absent father qualities.
In the latter, the guy commits crimes to get money for the baby while the girl faces abuse and shame from her mother. In the end the girl informs the guy that she is getting an abortion because of their desperate situation. He is upset about this but consents that it is the right thing to do. They reconnect a while later, and decide to give the relationship another shot.
So you see guys, babies ruin everything. /serious nuanced analysis of a couple pop songs
Not only is this a lovely pop song, it also features the only key change in pop music that I actually like.
