Tip #155: CAST SHADOWS ON THE FACE. The human face is interesting because of its complex construction. The cinematographer can magnify the visual impact by creating light and dark areas. The frame here is from the short horror film “Polaroid,” directed by Inchun Oh. Creating facial shadows is easy. Just angle the light source from the side, from above, or from below. Experimenting may be necessary to get the “right” look. Tip #126. TAKE NON-FACIAL PORTRAITS. A portrait most often shows the face of the subject. We love face images and will continue to celebrate them here. But portraits don’t have to be restricted to faces. Thanks to the astonishing @OnlinEtymologyDictionary we learn that the word “portrait” and its relative “portray” trace back to an old French verb meaning “to paint, depict.” As savvy filmmakers know, hands, feet, and other body parts can help define character.
