love it when my beer matches the cards 🍻
Oskar Blues Beerito Amber Mexican Lager (Picked up at Target). A 3 of 4. Some nice caramel malt and toasty notes in the body of this easy-drinking lager. A nice medium body and relatively high carbonation, and some faint grassy/herbal notes in the background.
The Simple Things
pFriem is dominating the shelves at our local New Seasons Market. Every week I see a new beer on display. Their simple label design makes it easy to swap out a few things and print a new batch without too much hassle. And they name every beer as simply as possible. No puns here. The IPA is an IPA and the Vienna Lager is a Vienna Lager. It’s a simple system.
Speaking of Vienna Lager, here’s a bottle of pFriem’s latest cold fermented brew. Vienna Lager is a close relative of Bavarian Helles. Both were invented within years of each other using newer malting techniques to make lighter colored beers. Vienna malt, the key ingredient in the lager, imparts a dry toasty flavor. A dash of hops for freshness and a clean fermentation make for a crisp beer style, which oddly found more traction in Mexico than it’s native Austria – see Dos Equis and Modelo Negra.
Peroni Gran Riserva Rossa (Picked up at an Iperal in Italy). A 2 of 4. Not nearly as rich as I was expecting -- the caramel malt qualities are a bit subdued and this is a bit thin. Some nice fruity qualities in the body and drinks rather cleanly with a slightly sweet finish. A very standard amber lager.
A Negra Modelo outdoors at my apartment complex. A 2 of 4. Smells of faint caramel and light grain notes with a faint roast quality. Almost a slightly doughy sweetness in the middle, and finishes clean in a very light body. Compared to other incredibly light Mexican lagers, this is quite complex. Compared to everything else, it’s just ok.
