Patriarch Vinitaruci - The Bodhidharma of Vietnam

Most people know who Bodhidharma was when asked. He was credited for bringing Chán Buddhism to China from India and became the first patriarch. Chán was then later spread to neighboring countries such as Korea, Japan, and even Vietnam. Bodhidharma is also regard as the founder of Shaolin Martial Art. We have heard many legends of this bearded "Blue-eyed barbarian" such as his famous exchange with the Emperor Wu, his nine years of wall meditation, his cutting of the eye lids, his famous saying:

A special transmission outside the scriptures, Not founded upon words and letters By pointing directly to one's mind Letting one see into one's true nature and attain Buddhahood

Though unsure whether all of these legends were truly of a man called Bodhidharma or not, in the mind and the imaginary of many, what he symbolize is very real.

But this blog entry isn't about Bodhidharma. There are many books and written articles and essays on this man already. Nothing else to be added.

In many Vietnamese temple, it is not uncommon to see a statue of Bodhidharma as the center of the ancestral shrine as it is true that he is too considered the patriarch of certain sect of Thiền Buddhism in Vietnam. However, Thiền Buddhism wasn't introduced to Vietnam by the successor of Bodhidharma like many mistakenly believed to be, only Lâm Tế (Ch. Linji, Jp. Rinzai) and Tào Động (Ch. Caodong, Jp. Soto) schools which were both introduced to Vietnam from China around the 17th century.Though in a way he was somewhat a successor of Bodhidharma with his encounter with the 3rd patriarch of Chan and that he had visited China before heading to Vietnam. 

Thiền Buddhism was originally introduced to Vietnam in the 7th century by a much less-known man, Vinitaruci (Vietnamese sounding: Tỳ-ni-đà-lưu-chi), also known as Diệt Hỷ in Hán-Việt. Vinitaruci was from South India born of a Brahmin caste. He established the first Thiền school of Vietnam after his own name, Tỳ Ni Đa Lưu Chi.

Vinitaruci was different even from a young age. He traveled all of west India in seek of Dharma. In the year 574, he traveled to China during the time in which Buddhism was being oppressed thus many monastic communities were in hiding for refuge. During this time, Vinitaruci met Jianzhi Sengcan (Vn. Tăng Xán), the 3rd patriarch of Chinese Chán. According to story passed down, Vinitaruci came before Sengcan and knelt before him with both hands clasped together. Sengcan remained silent and while contemplating, Vinitaruci awakened to true nature. He bowed down to Sengcan three times and Sengcan nodded but still remained silent. Quickly left after the event, Vinitaruci never studied under Sengcan or became his disciple.

At around the year 580, Vinitaruci reached Vietnam and stayed at Pháp Vân temple of Hà Bắc province. Here he took in disciples and taught the Dharma which prospered. Here he also translated the Sutra Đại Thừa Phương Quảng Tổng trì (大乘方廣總持經?, I believe this may be the Srimalasimhanada Sutra but is not completely sure).

Shortly before his death, he called his chief disciple, Pháp Hiền, and spoke the following as he recognizes Pháp Hiền as the second patriarch:

"The Dharma seal of the Buddha, do not deceives as it brings one to the great void (?), not lacking or too plenty, no departure no arrival, no gain no loss, not the same nor different, no length nor shortness, originally was not born(create), neither does it dies (destruct). Also not far off, neither is it not far off. Because due to dreaming for it thus falsely gave it a name. Therefore, the Buddha of three periods are like so, many generation of patriarch are like so thus attained, I am also because of like that thus attain, you are also because of it thus attain, to those of feeling or without feeling like so thus attain. Patriarch Sengcan when witness this mind told me to quickly head South to propagate the teaching, not to remain there. I had traveled through many places, now I had came and met you which is truly appropriate and marvelous, now you must maintain and take care, the time of my departure had arrived. "

After that, Vinitaruci passed away in the year 594. Pháp Hiền cremated him and constructed stupa for his relics.

Much later on, Emperor Lý Thái Tông (1028-1054) spoke the following poem in honor of Vinitaruci:

Opening the path to South country Heard honored one mastered practice of meditation Demonstrating Buddha's quality Returning to original mind The full moon is bright and clear Prajna Flower sweetly fragrant When we get the chance to meet Lets discuss the profound Dharma

Lay: “Tên tôi là Lay” – còn có nghĩa khác là tôi mệt a~ vì mệt nên tôi hay ngơ a~ mà ngơ rồi nên tôi hay quên a~ Phải rồi, lúc nãy mình kéo khoá quần chưa ấy nhỉ? *dòm xuống*

Luhan: “Là như vậy đó!” – Câu cửa miệng của tôi. Còn nữa, mọi người hay nói tôi là “Thiên hạ đệ nhất kết liễu câu chuyện”. Tôi cũng không hiểu! Nah~ là như vậy đó!

Kai: “Da tôi không có đen” – Chỉ là nó sậm hơn tí xíu và khi tôi đứng trong bóng tối thì sẽ khó nhận ra hơn tí xíu thôi mà. Tôi nhắc lại, tôi không phải là “Kam Nhông!”

Suho: “Tôi là người bảo hộ của các thành viên” – Công việc của tôi là, sáng sáng vác mỏ đi làm chuông báo thức. Trưa trưa vác mỏ đi làm kẻng báo cơm. Tối tối lại vác mỏ làm nông dân lùa bầy vào chuồng đi ngủ! Bảo hộ!

Chen: “Tôi là Dancing Machine” – tôi luôn tin tưởng như thế! Đến một ngày nào đó mà rất khó để xác định, tôi sẽ là một Dancing Machine!

XiuMin: “Bánh Bao” – Tôi yêu bánh bao, bánh bao thật tuyệt vời! Nhìn này, tôi là bánh bao, tôi thích ăn bánh bao, má tôi là má bánh bao, tôi thích làm mặt bánh bao, tôi phát cuồng vì bánh bao, bánh bao blah.. bánh bao blah… bánh bao blah…
