Ho Chi Minh Museum. For a heady mix of socialism and kitsch pop art, why not head to the Ho Chi Minh Museum in Hanoi the next time you are there. The Ho Chi Minh Museum is located within the mausoleum complex itself and is a short walk from the mausoleum. A visit to the mausoleum complex isn’t only about viewing the embalmed body of Ho Chi Minh. The complex is quite a vast area with several things to see, including Ba Dinh Square, the Presidential Palace with Ho Chi Minh’s Stilt House, the Ho Chi Minh Museum and the One Pillar Pagoda. The museum opened on the 19th of May 1990, the 100th birthday of Ho Chi Minh. It is a documentation of his life, broken down into eight topics in chronological order. However, unlike other museums across Vietnam, this one is especially modern both in terms of thought and presentation. Independence Palace. For those visiting Ho Chi Minh City, or Saigon as it is popularly known as, Independence Palace is a must-see. Especially if you are interested in history and have a fair idea of what transpired in the mid-1970s. It used to be called Norodom Palace and was the French colonial headquarters during France's reign over the region. When they departed, it became the residence of the South Vietnamese president Ngo Dinh Diem. However, he was such a despised leader that his own air force tried to finish him off by bombing the palace in 1962. He ordered a new residence to be built on the same site, with a bomb shelter, which was completed in 1966. Unfortunately, for him, he never got to see it. He was killed by his own troops in 1963. General Nguyen Van Thieu, the military head, decided to move into the completed palace instead. In the process, he also changed its name to Independence Palace. It’s from here that he and his commanders tried their best to fend off the communist forces. And then, on the 21st of April 1975, he was evacuated by the US forces in what would be the largest helicopter evacuation anywhere in the world. While it was renamed as the Reunification Palace immediately after the fall of Saigon, it is today known officially by its original name – Independence Palace. . . . Read more on the blog. Isolation. I wore a mask when I stepped out. I kept my distance as best as I could. I sanitized my hands as often as needed. After a year of watching what I do, who I meet, and where I go, it all came to naught one fine Monday evening three weeks ago. I should have known better. Being cooped up indoors all these months, I thought it would be okay to catch up with the boys at the club for a drink or three. And while we all kept our distance as best as possible, I realised there was always the possibility of slipping up. Four days later, I woke up with a high fever that lasted for a day. For the next four nights, I sweated so much that I would wake up in the middle of the night just to change the side of my pillow. It was only a week later that I realised I had also lost my sense of taste and smell. While much better now, to assuage my fears, I did an antibody test a few days ago and the results came back positive. That is a further two weeks of self-quarantine for me. Isolation works fine for me. Besides, we are also in the middle of a lockdown until the end of the month. The positive from all of this is that I hope the antibodies are doing their job, at least for the next 40 to 60 odd days.  As for the vaccine, I will have to put it off for the next three months. All I can say is that wherever you are, please be careful. While numbers are rising across the world, we are going through a second, and far deadlier wave here in India. It could be the most mundane of things that you feel are okay to do. If it is avoidable, then leave it for another day. Those drinks with the mates can wait. Be safe people. Opera House. Its official name is the Municipal Theatre of Ho Chi Minh City. However, everyone knows it as Saigon Municipal Opera House. Within the vicinity of the Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Central Post Office, this is another fine example of French colonial architecture that is so prevalent in Vietnam. This 500-seat opera was built in 1897 by Eugène Ferret as the Opera de Saigon. However, from 1956 right until the city’s liberation in 1975, it housed the Lower House assembly of South Vietnam. It was finally restored to its former glory in 1995. Today, it is the main venue for high-profile and cultural events. The laughing Buddha. Seriously, who wouldn't walk away with a smile after gazing at this Buddha statue? About three kilometers from My Tho city, in the heart of the Mekong Delta, is the Vinh Trang pagoda. It is among the most well-known in the region and one of the most fascinating, not least because of the three enormous Buddha statues within its complex. A standing Buddha symbolising bliss and compassion is located just outside the main gate. Walk into the complex and you are greeted by a reclining Buddha, meant to symbolise nirvana. However, it is the statue next to this one that, to me, was by far the best - a laughing Buddha, symbolising happiness and showering you with good luck smiles. In 1984, the government recognised the pagoda as a national historical and cultural relic, making it among the Mekong Delta's biggest attractions today. Have you been here? Vietnam Military Museum For visitors who wish to understand a bit on Vietnam and its many wars for Independence, then a stop at the Vietnam Military Museum, simply known as Military Museum, is a must. Nevermind that it may be a biased viewpoint. It is Hanoi’s oldest museum, and opened its doors to the public on the 15th anniversary of the Vietnamese Army Day, in 1959 – a mere five years after emerging victorious at Dien Bien Phu. Vietnam’s history, especially the last century, has always been about fighting for independence. While all that is behind them, many remnants of these brutal wars are still alive at the museum. The Vietnam Military museum has an extensive collection of armoury, downed and seized aircraft, and even artefacts that date back to the Hong Bang Dynasty that flourished around 2879 BC. Parts of the exhibits, especially the aircraft and guns are positioned outdoors, while the artefacts and other exhibits are indoors. The exhibits in the main hall, which is also the original building, primarily focuses on the first Indochina war. A newer building focuses on the war with the Americans. Some of the highlights include the two tanks that crashed through the wrought-iron gates of Independence Palace in Saigon, on the 30th of April 1975. However, the highlight of the museum surely must be the courtyard where a few aircraft, tanks and guns have been positioned. . . . Read more on the blog. Hanoi night market Should you ever get to go to Vietnam, once this pandemic is hopefully history, then don't miss out on the weekend night market in Hanoi, bustling with locals out for a good deal and wide-eyed tourists. Held every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, this roadside market comes into its own from 7pm onwards. Free of Hanoi's notorious traffic, it allows you to aimlessly wander this stretch, without having to look left or right. Instead, what greets you are scores of mostly friendly vendors selling everything, from imitation watches and bags, to t-shirts and souvenirs. It stretches on the 3km Hang Dao Street, all the way from Dong Xuan market gate right up to Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc square. Have you been here?
