“Toothless will be fine. You have my word,” Viggo told him.
Viggo was certainly hard to trust when it came to his word (or at all), but the fact that Viggo used Toothless’s personal name rather than simply calling him “the Night Fury” or “Dragon” was there, right there, in the air. Hiccup definitely was storing that piece of information in his brain. Viggo was surprising him.
Soon afterwards, Viggo surprised him again by stating, “There’s no way I would torture this dragon” while having his palm on the nose of a Skrill.
Toothless beside him was also surprised.
Those words meant a lot to Hiccup. The way he said them. It felt genuine.
And then Viggo said Toothless’s name again, after asking about a spare tailfin. “Get Toothless ready to fly,” he said.
As Hiccup did that, Viggo stood near the Skrill, quietly petting the dragon, which itself was surprising. Toothless had encircled Hiccup so Hiccup could be near Toothless’s face while also working on getting the tailfin on his tail.
“That was genuine, right?” Hiccup whispered. “I never expected to hear him say that, bud. And he’s petting the Skrill right now, too!”
Toothless cooed.
Once the tail was on, Hiccup pet Toothless’s face, giving him some extra love. Just in case.
He could feel Viggo’s eyes on him.
And Viggo did not comment on it once they were back on the saddle, with the Skrill following them.
And as the four of them worked on the plan to deal with Johann and Krogan, Hiccup took note that Viggo used Toothless’s name a lot and even used the word “our friend” to refer to the Skrill.
Hiccup found himself chuckling at Viggo’s suggestion that Hiccup use the phrase “flowery talk” during the part of their plan where Hiccup, Toothless, and the Skrill were to be captured.
What truly tipped the scale for Hiccup (and Toothless, judging from his response) was when Viggo said in the most beautiful voice, looking tenderly at Toothless, “I would never harm such a magnificent creature.”
And then he saw the arrows in Viggo’s back.
And made a decision. He was going to drag Viggo out of this Thor forsaken cave, no matter what. He was going to save this man.
Viggo said that he was going to hold the Hunters off until Hiccup and Toothless were out of the cave.
“No, I’m not going to leave you,” Hiccup said.
Viggo started to say something about being ruthless.
“Nope, not listening. Get on my dragon right now,” Hiccup said, in a tone that indicated he was not going to take any arguments on the matter.
So, he did.
Which is why Viggo found himself lying on a makeshift bed in the Clubhouse on Dragon’s Edge, with a Skrill cuddled as close as possible to him, and Hiccup holding his hand. Toothless was definitely nearby. He could hear his purrs.
“I still think it’s adorable how you thought Hiccup was just gonna let you die,” Snotlout said. “He’s the most boarheaded of all time.”
The four other Dragon Riders nodded and Viggo heard Toothless growl in agreement.
