500 words had me struggling to fit what I wanted in so few words, but either way here it it. Sorry if it kinda sucks or has bad grammar.
Characters:
Marneus Calgar, Ultramarine Chapter Master
Erasmus Cartavolnus, Imperial Inquisitior
Planet: Vigilus, during the War of Beasts
————————————————————————
Entering, the old Inquisitor gazed upon a sight to behold, a meeting, one of many, of individuals a mere mortal might not even see one of in his lifetime. This was the War Council of the Legendary Marneus Calgar, a congregation of various Astartes, Sororitas, Mechanicus, and militarum officers dedicated to the defense of Vigilus. A planet threatened by many invaders, human and otherwise. However, he had only just arrived at its conclusion. Plans had already been made and decisions were about to followed through.
“This meeting is adjourned.” The nearly eight foot tall man spoke to his council, a wash of anguish in his voice, “May the Emperor guide you all in battle.”
The others gave their farewells, signs of the Aquila, or a fist to the chest. Even amongst them, in the far back, an Aeldari retreated back to his own kind.
Calgar sighed as if he were left alone, or so he thought. Erasmus stood by the entrance of the make-shift council chamber, which was once the foyer of a mansion owned by the Agamemnus family.
“Ah. Inquisitor.” Calgar said in slight surprise, “I wasn’t made aware that your force had arrived as well.”
Erasmus scoffed, “I don’t need a welcoming party, Lord Calgar. Where the Archenemy goes, I follow. I just wanted to make an introduction.”
Calgar looked down at him curiously, “Is that so? Then I’m all ears.”
“I am Inquisitor Cartavolnus. I have come because of the reports that the Warmaster himself has disgraced himself upon Vigilus, Emperor forbid. No doubt he plans to spoil the planet with structures of chaos.”
“Should you have come earlier,” The Chapter Master responded sarcastically, “Then you would known that we plan to trap Abbadon while allied forces destroy the Vengeful Spirit. Perhaps you could join us in our efforts.”
Erasmus willingly ignored the rude remark, “With the long ears? Surely a man of your wisdom would know not to trust a Xeno.”
“I need not your criticism as well, Inquisitor. Every day I fear this world will just be another loss to the Heretics and Xenos, the odds are stacked against us.”
“Yet your forces grow and grow, you might even have the Emperor’s favor. Despite working with cunning filth.”
The blue brute gave a troubled sigh, “It is not he who I worry being in favor. I wish not to disappoint Lord Guilliman, like I have done so many times already.”
“Guilliman?! Ha!” The Inquisitor chuckled, “He has no time to deal with such frivolous matters. Why in the Emperor’s name would he be disappointed in you, if that was the case to begin with?”
“He told me not to dwell on such things.”
“Then don’t.”
“But I cannot stray my mind.”
“Allow me to give some bitter advice, Chapter Master. Think not of the past, or it will haunt you. Doing such allows for corruption, and I will not hesitate to do what I must if said corruption gives the enemies of the Imperium… sway.”
One of the more fun books put out by Games Workshop in recent times, YMMV obviously, but it was a nice bit of world building and scene setting that reminded me a lot of codex: Armageddon and codex: Eye of Terror done aeons ago.
Small whispers could be faintly heard under the mask before what seemed like the mask itself speaking over them, clarifying whatever they mumbled.
“I do not question your creators’ skills nor their goals, though perhaps I question their choices of design. What I mean to say is that technology should never be accepted as a moment of perfection; only the Omnissiah may claim that title. Technology must always evolve and change. I could help with said self-improvements, though it depends on how compatible you may be.”
I haven’t felt this angry in ages. I can’t even express my sheer frustration.
Worse than the always losing, worse than the always being worse at everything, worse than the always dying, I HATE WHEN XENOS ARE JUST PLAYED AS USELESS SUBSERVENIENT SLAVES.
Saim-Hann literally gets freaking BROW-BEATEN into serving the Imperium whilst the story jacks off to how superior Marneus is to the thousand year old future-seeing psykers.
OIhgasoighasd
I want to scream. I am so tired of this. I AM SO TRIED OF THIS> I don’t even know what to say, repeat ad nauseam what I’ve said befor,e give up all hope there will be any time ever in lore wehre Xenos are ANYTHING but dead bodies to make Space Marines look cool or brow beaten into submisions to make Space Marines look cool.
HWat the hell is the problem that fans of anythig but Space Marines are never allowed to feel good about their ownf actions in stories? Why ist his? Why is taht? WHy? WY? WHY?
Readig thorugh Vigilus Defiant atm, about halfway through so far its pretty bad.
There's some fun bits, like Genestealers coming up out of toilets to take over water plants and the genial Chaos invasion strategy of “land on the roof, because no one looks up” actually working on a planet-wide scale is actually hilarious, but mostly its the same old rehashed "Space Marines win everything", so far every battle the Space Marines have been engaged in has ended in either victory* or in a safe tactical retreat after having inflicted massive losses on the enemy.
Oh and they massacred a refugee column. So that was also a thing.
Also Eldar got royally shafted, doing nothing of value and then getting killed over it. Twice even.
But we all know GW's writers hate Eldar with a passion, so no surprise there.
As the War of the Beasts rages on Vigilus, the Adepta Sororitas have stepped up their presence and helped led the counter-attack and defense of the planet. Let's meet the players of the Sisters of Battle!
