She still has life in her, she still has fight in her.
#Lootera brought to life the story of The Last Leaf by O. Henry, through beautiful poetry in motion. It stayed imprinted from the first viewing.
A scene that I adored has no dialogue and no music, just a struggle between two lovers who aren’t that anymore. It takes off from the song Shikayatein, where a regretful but in love Varun , decides to stay back and care for an ailing Pakhi. This scene builds up from a cup of tea Varun has prepared for Pakhi. She rejects the gesture with words that are dipped in poison and walks out, just when her attack begins and she finds it difficult to breathe. Varun pulls out the injection and what commences is fight between the two lovers without words.
The scene has no dialogues and has little light from the windows. The outside seems to have a stillness yet the clouds thunder, a reflection of the characters within. Both the characters are filled with a ferocious purpose, rejection from Pakhi and dedication from Varun to help her.
The scene builds from aggression to a struggle between the two.
This scene draws dappled light to the life left in Pakhi. She still has passion, she still has the fight in her. She just needs to feel again, to believe again and more importantly to trust again. Their feisty exchange, ending in Varun heaving over an equally exhausted Pakhi, gives you a peek into their fire.
It couldn’t be extinguished and now Varun is more determined than before to bring her out of the self imposed shell and cage . All this while, the important call from the inspector just continues and fades off in the background. In the end of the scene, Varun extends his hand, that is lit up with the light from outside. Pakhi stares at his hand, while she is still in the shadows of the room and smacks it. She isn’t ready to embrace the hope yet but we get an inclination that this will be her hope.
We bind ourselves, like Pakhi in a room that comforts our thoughts, maybe we need a Varun or just someone to fight for us to take that breath, the fresh air and that hope for life. Break open the cage.
