the real mystery of cruel summer is why the characters are always wearing so many layers when it’s, well, summer
Can we talk about how shitty of a friend Mallory was to Jeanette and Vincent? Especially Jeanette. Not enough people talk on this tbh, mainly since everyone’s on the “I-hate-Jeanette-train” after the season finale. Mallory heavily peer pressured Jeanette during their friendship and every time she did it I internally cringed, since I’ve been peer pressured so often. She brought straight up drugs into Jeanette’s house and pressed Vincent and Jeanette to smoke it. THEY WERE 15! Then when Jeanette flushed the drugs, she had nerve to get pissed. Mallory deserved to be grounded after pressuring her underage friends to smoke illegal drugs over a fucking list. They could’ve gotten in so much worse trouble. That’s not even where it ends.
Mallory then takes Vincent and Jeanette to the mall so they can cross off stealing from their list. Once again, Jeanette and Vincent don’t want to do this, but Mallory insists. When they get caught, she dashes and leaves her friends for the police. Jeanette had to take up for Vincent. Still isn’t where it ends. Mallory tries to pull off one more big stunt. Jeanette tells her she doesn’t want to participate, and Mallory gaslighted the hell out of her. Mallory made Jeanette feel like if she had no choice but do as she says, otherwise Jeanette would be a “wimpy loser.” Then when Mallory gets caught, she snaps at Jeanette for “abandoning her” though she did the exact fucking thing at the mall. Jeanette, rightfully so, ended that toxic friendship. Mallory really doesn’t get enough heat for terrible she was.
Jeanette: I didn’t say anything about Vincent
No because Jeanette definitely had a crush on Kate. The way she looked at her in the mall, and seemed uncomfortable when Jamie came up and started talking with Kate. And their interaction after the dance thing (was it like yoga? I can't remember). Jeanette clearly really liked her.
ALSO: 🥺🥺🥺when Jeanette took the blame for the CD for Vincent in ‘93. And when they bonded over having secrets together in ‘94, and she was so happy for him having a boyfriend just because he seemed happy🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺
Cruel Summer
So I just finished watching and I love Gay crumbs in any show as much as the next person but let me just tell you my take on the Kate&Mallory relationship/kiss.
I don't like it at all because it is basically Kate and Martin all over again just age appropriate. Because here's the gist of it Mallory groomed Kate just like Martin by inserting herself in Kate's Life and using Kate's PTSD as an "in" over supposed mutual abuse bonding when in reality we never saw Mallory abused only heard about it and if you want to look even further into the creep Factor level of the show how do we know Mallory didn't purposely insert herself and that it wasn't just a coincidence at the therapist office maybe she wanted revenge on Kate for stealing her friend in a way and maybe she followed her to the therapist I mean think about it Kate offered up the therapist name first giving away free info and everything else that was said about the therapist you would really only have to have basic human knowledge to know about it was all straight psychology 101. Also we can note that she attached herself to Kate on a obsessive level after the rescue when she previously wanted nothing to do with her. Point being is just like Martin she made herself available to all of Kate's woes and trauma and not just on a friendly level it's shown that if not before somehow that shortly after the rescue and or becoming "friends"with Kate she felt in love with her and that's why she feel bad about not coming clean about the Christmas Eve incident even though it could have saved a lot of people.
That's my point which is only further concreted by the fact that Mallory and Jeannette both did f***** up stuff regarding Kate. Yet Kate still actively wanted Mallory in her life yes she forgave Jeanette but still called her a creep when Mallory was just as bad because at that point Mallory had already trained her to need her. And that's also why I think she entered a relationship / kiss her at the ending because she felt a bond with her like Martin and because of the trauma she endured sexually with Martin as implied she gravitates more strongly towards women now and that's also furthered by the fact that she wasn't as into Jamie after the rescue as she was before.
DISCLAIMER: BECAUSE I KNOW SOME PEOPLE NOT AT ALL BUT SOME ARE GOING TO SAY SOMETHING NO I DO NOT THINK THE SEXUAL ABUSE MADE HER GAY. But I do think it was I contributing factor towards her maybe leaning more towards same sex relationships in the post rescue era.
P.S. Furthermore, I can only say this with confidence as a woman childhood sexual abuse survivor who is now bisexual with a heavy leaning towards women despite having never been in a relationship I feel safer thinking about a woman romantically and sexually. A lot of us don't want to admit that we know that sexual abuse does tend to lead to a distrust of whatever gender the perpetrator was and that's a sad fact.
Please feel free to discuss the show/this theory or anything else you might need to get off the chest with me PM me or put it in my ask anonymously of course unless you're okay with being known. Hope everyone's having a wonderful evening.
Cruel Summer: Vince Fuller - Type 6w5
Vince is loyal, caring, quiet and compassionate. Vince is a consistently loyal friend to Jeanette throughout it all.
At his best, Vince is a very steadfast and good friend. Vince would do anything for his friends. He also becomes more comfortable in his own skin through his relationship with Ben.
At his worst, Vince can tend to ignore problems and become isolated in his relationships. For example, he stops seeing Ben when he is hurt and seems to become very reserved.
Vince seems to care deeply about being loyal in his friendships, which can be common for 6s. Vince maintains his friendship with both Jeanette and Mallory, despite their group breaking up. Vince believes Jeanette and even lies in his disposition to make sure that her case works out. However, Vince has to have some kind of peace of mind and eventually asks Jeanette how many times she visited the house. After this, he is ok with lying as he feels like Jeanette is honest to him.
Vince is very protective of Jeanette, especially after she is effectively ostracised from the town. As her neighbour, he watches to make sure nothing bad happens to her and is always on the look-out for anything suspicious. Vince also calls Jeanette to tell her that Jamie is outside her house and is always trying to make sure he doesn’t do anything bad to her, especially as he witnessed her being punched by Jamie.
Vince shows his wing 5 as he is more introverted and reserved than a 6w7.
Tri-type: 6w5 - 2w1 - 9w1
Some quotes to describe Vince’s motivations
“I need to ask you something, and you need to tell me the truth. Jeanette, how many times have you been in this house?”
“Look, I find her movie selection creepy.“
Jeanette: “You seem happy.” Vince: “Insanely.” Jeanette: “Okay, good! Then we’re all happy! You can tell Ben we’re all happy, okay?” Vince: “Okay.”
Jamie: “Everyone at school today has been torturing her!” Vince: “You kinda made it open season when you gave her a black eye!”
