“What about Ricki?” Vincent asked. Cloud blinked at his cup. “Yeah, I made enough for her, too.” Of course he had, he always did. “I mean, what do you want to tell her? She’s going to be at the wed–-the party, right? The Turks will likely speak with her. Do you want to tell her the truth?” Finally raising his stare to Vincent, Cloud’s stomach sank with a growing sense of foreboding as he realized what he was asking… and what the inevitable answer needed to be. “No,” he wheezed. “She… she’s honest. She’s kind. I don’t… I don’t think she could carry a lie for long. I wouldn’t want her to try.” Vincent nodded. “Then we tell her the story we told the Turks.” “That you came here months ago?” Cloud asked dryly. “We can tell her we needed to make it seem longer, to add legitimacy. So all she needs to do is exaggerate the timeline. But otherwise, we make sure she thinks it’s all true. I loved you before, and that love rekindled when I came to help you.” Withering on the inside, Cloud closed his eyes as he heard the words that he desperately wanted to hear, but in a devastatingly clipped and clinical tone. The professional Turk planning his strategy. “To ensure she believes us,” Vincent continued, each cool word making Cloud’s stomach drop even further, “we should become comfortable with expressions of affection. You agreed to hold hands yesterday. May I also put an arm around you and kiss your cheek–” Cloud’s mug exploded in his hand, spraying hot coffee and ceramic shards all over him. “Shit!” He jumped to his feet, his face hot with embarrassment, shaking his stinging hand and tugging the soaked material of his jeans away from his skin. “Shitshitshit–”

My (woefully inadequate) short summary: Cloud and Vincent are trapped in a nightmare of someone's making. So how do they get out?
My rec: Look, this fic has some pretty intense content (heed the archive warning and tags!), but it’s also hilarious, beautiful, sweet, and—oh, by the way—a tour de force of post-modernist style. There are cowboys and knights and literal paper dolls, plus a nostalgic visit to Cloud’s old Treehouse of Shame.
10/10, would sleep in Only One Bed with again.
