she doesn’t like him, hans could tell. and it’s not his fault that she doesn’t. it’s not his fault either that anna — sweet, bright, and oh-so-lonely anna — was so quick to introduce him to her as a close friend, a - what do they call it these days ? - study buddy, even. though hans doesn’t need a study buddy. if he does not excel in anything, it will be entirely an information he and his tutor would know - no one else. he cannot be perceived as anything short of perfect lest he wants his brothers’ teeth sinking into him in forms of mockery and insults. which, if he were to be frank, he does not need more of.
and anyways — the heiress to arendelle does not like him.
hans does not care, except he does. it itches at him, that his smiles cannot fool her; that his gentle demeanour, so many years of him practising how to bow and speak and soften parts of his expression on demand, cannot impress her. though that’s foolish, to even need to impress her. what shall he gain from it ? anna clearly does not need her sister’s permission for a few hours of tutoring. and that’s all it was, wasn’t it ? mayhaps anna holds some sort of ... feelings for him, but they are not courting. hans isn’t, at least.
so why does it matter if the older sister does not approve ? there is nothing to approve of in the first place. yet still, the itch is ever-present, and hans smiles automatically; his dimple shows. he does not give his irritation away. ‘ ah, your highness. i see the newly-crowned prince and princesses have invited you. ’
