Meg and Bela had always joked about what they would do if the world ever came to an end. They’d grab all the food and supplies they could and meet up at the old house in the woods where her father used to take her on hunting trips, that was left to Bela when her grandmother died, then wait until they were together to make the next move, whatever that may be, and they’d make sure they’d swing by and pick up Bela’s step sister, Violet, as well. The house is out of the way and unlikely to be subject to looting, and the cellar would be easy to barricade themselves in, if need be. But as much as they talked about it, it’s not something they ever really expected to happen.
They declare a state of emergency on a Wednesday in July. Bela had left two days prior to attend a conference in Philadelphia, leaving Meg to a quiet week at home alone with their pet bird. The second she hears about what’s happening, she attempts to call Bela, but she can’t get through. She tries to keep her mind off of the panic by packing up her belongings, and some of Bela’s, and packing up the car. If this really is what everyone’s saying it is, then Bela knows the plan.
Once Meg gets out of the city, she’s met with less traffic, and she takes the back roads all the way to Bela’s grandmother’s house. It’s old and creaky, and you have to run the faucets for a little bit before the water starts running clear, but all it really needs is to be swept, dusted, and aired out, and it’d be completely livable. Good thing too, because Meg has no idea how long they’ll be stuck here.
Two days later, she hears movement outside. Her heart swells with the hope that it’s Bela - or at least Violet - and that she can relax at least a little bit. What she sees from her vantage point by one of the second story windows, however, is not Bela or Violet. In fact, it doesn’t appear to be a woman at all. She makes her way quietly downstairs, grabbing the old Smith & Wesson from the gun cabinet in the den and heads out the kitchen door so she can sneak up on him.
He turns to face her when she cocks the gun, hands in the air as he presses himself back against the wall of the house, stuttering and fumbling over his words as he tries to come up with a reason for her not to shoot him. When she asks him who he is and what he’s doing there, he gives her his name - Andy - and says his car broke down a few miles away and he went walking to try to find help, or a ride, or shelter, and that’s when he stumbled upon this place, which looked like it wasn’t occupied. When she points out her car parked by the side of the house, he blushes and says he didn’t notice that until just before he saw her pointing the gun at him.
Meg remains wary, but she lets the guy in. He seems mostly harmless and is carrying a bag full of non-perishable food and batteries, so she figures the possible reward is worth the risk, so long as she keeps the gun loaded and within reach.

Violet always thought Bela and Meg’s little apocalypse plan was sort of ridiculous. She changed her tune, however, when she became a TA for Professor Spangler. Everyone on campus knows he’s a little…eccentric, but he’s a good professor, and generally well liked by the students and faculty. Being his TA, she has heard all sorts of conspiracy theories, some completely out of left field, but some actually made sense. There was actual scientific support. He went in depth one day about the statistical possibility of various apocalyptic events, and she started thinking that maybe having a plan wasn’t so absurd after all.
Since then, she’s been keeping a few essentials in her car, in case something like that happened. It’s not like they wouldn’t come in handy in other situations anyway. So when the news breaks, she’s prepared, and knows exactly what she’s going to do. Or at least, what she would do if someone hadn’t decided to carjack her.
Violet finds herself carrying her go bag and heading north out of town, wishing that theft was something she’d figured in to her plan, when she hears someone honking behind her. She turns to see Professor Spangler’s head poking out of a reasonably priced car being driven by his…partner? Friend? Room mate? She’s never been one hundred percent sure about the relationship he has with Ed.
She doesn’t hesitate to climb into the car when Professor Spangler - he keeps telling her to call him Harry, but to this day, she just can’t bring herself to - tells her to hop in. When she tells them where she’s headed, they say she should stick with them. They’re heading a little ways further than where she’s going so they can find Ed’s sister.

Bela didn’t really want to go to Philly. She was supposed to stay back and hold the fort. But a week before the conference, the woman who was supposed to go, went into early labor, and there was no one else to go in her stead but Bela. That’s how she ended up stuck miles away from Meg, and from Violet, and from the place that was meant to be their safe haven.
She’s lucky though. Her hotel is at the edge of the city, so she doesn’t have a hard time getting out. She does, however, hit an unexpected hitch when she comes across a woman getting hassled by two thugs on some side street. The woman seems to be handling herself pretty well, but then a third guy comes out of nowhere, and the woman doesn’t see him. On the bright side, the man doesn’t see Bela, so she manages to grab something heavy and metal that was in the middle of the street, and bash him over the head with it. The two of them work together after that and manage to fight the men off until they’re all either unconscious, or have run off.
The woman introduces herself as Brigitta. Her husband left her when shit hit the fan to go run off with his twenty four year old yoga instructor, saying that if the world was going to end, he wanted to spend it with his true love. So Brigitta decided to take the opportunity to go see her estranged father, with whom she hasn’t spoken in eleven years. It just so happens that Brigitta’s destination is in approximately the same direction as Bela’s, and as they just found out, things can get dangerous on your own, so they decide to team up until their paths have to split.
