Why Violin Builds Discipline Better Than Any Other Instrument
(Adapted from the original Dhwani Sangeet Mahavidyalaya blog)
🎻 The violin is more than just an instrument—it’s a powerful teacher of discipline, patience, focus, and emotional balance. Among all the musical instruments taught in different music schools—Guitar, Keyboard, Drum, Tabla, Harmonium, Congo, Dholak, and more—the violin stands apart because it challenges both the mind and the body in a uniquely transformative way.
Learning violin requires precision, posture control, deep listening, and dedicated practice. There are no frets and no shortcuts—you train your ear, your mind, and your emotions to work in perfect harmony. This process naturally develops discipline that goes far beyond music.

“Quilting” or “stitching” is a powerful #violinpractice🎻 #practiceroom #practiceroutine I use when passages seem intimidating at first glance. The concept is simple…start with small groups and stitch them together into larger and larger groups until the entire passage is easy. Here’s an example of this #violinpractice in #spanishdance by #ukrainiancomposer #myroslavskoryk (mm 44-50) 5 videos: 1) One measure at a time - repeat each measure several times (I repeat 3 times in this video for brevity; however in a real #violinpractise session it will likely be a lot more) ~swipe left~ 2) Two measure groups overlapping (1+2, 2+3, 3+4, etc.) ~swipe left~ 3) Three measure groups overlapping (1+2+3, 3+4+5, 5+6+7, etc) ~swipe left~ 4) performance version - the practice process can be extended to create larger groups by I find if three measure at a time becomes easy I can usually play the entire passage easily. ~swipe left~ 5) Photo of mm 44-50. Note: If one measure at a time is too difficult at first, build smaller groups first - first two notes, second two notes, etc. #violinteacher #violinpedagogy #violintechnique #practiceroom #violinmasterclass #violinmaster #violinfun #violinguy #ukrainianclassicalmusic #ukrainianviolinist #ukrainianculture #spanishviolinist #мирославскорик #класичнамузика #українськамузика #скрипаль #violinsoloist (at Washington D.C.) https://www.instagram.com/p/CcxVZPEufRZ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
#silentpractice #violinpractice Fingering silently with the left hand is a great way to develop left hand clarity. I can hear the dropping and lifting of fingers clearly. I’m more likely to notice if a note is late or early and fix it. Here’s an example of my practice in #carpathianrhapsody for #violinandpiano by #ukrainiancomposer #myroslavskoryk (measures 11-12) Three videos: 1) silent practice feeling and listening for the steadiness of the notes. ~swipe left~ 2) Performance version - notes are steady and even under the long slurs! ~swipe left~ 3) photo of excerpt #violin #violinist #violinteacher #skoryk #carpathian #hutsul #ukrainianclassicalmusic #ukrainianmusic #violinpedagogy #violintechnique #practiceviolin #violinpracticejournal #violinlesson #violintips #мирославскорик #карпатський #рапсодия #скрипаль #українськакультура (at Washington D.C.) https://www.instagram.com/p/CcTCsKJL-u2/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
#violinpractice smooth #stringchange in #detache #fastplaying passages such as these #fastruns in #spanishdance by #ukrainiancomposer #myroslavskoryk I smooth out these runs/scales by anticipating the string crossing and playing the new string as a double stop with the old string. This trains me to begin the string crossings earlier so I will arrive on the new string with less impact thereby making the passage smooth and even. Three videos/pictures: 1) Practicing measure 90 ~swipe left~ 2) Practicing measure 94 ~swipe left~ 3) Picture of the relevant passages in the #violinpart #violinteacher #violinpedagogy #stringpedagogy #violinlessons #suzukiviolinteacher #violinskills #violintips #practiceviolin #practiceviolineveryday #skoryk #мирославскорик #испанскийтанец #испанскийтанец💃 #скрипаль #класическаямузыка #класичнамузика (at Washington D.C.) https://www.instagram.com/p/CcAkThDL76V/?utm_medium=tumblr
Having fun journaling a bit of my practices on violin 🎻 this is my first day of practice.
I started at 12:00 & I’m taking a break now at 12:26.I played from basically from pg.1-7.
My goal is to be at or beyond pg.19 before next Tuesday’s class. I started this beginner class late so I desire to catch up with the class with proficiency.
So I’ll be jumping back in to advance a bit more with my practice. I may do some 2 or even 3 a day practices to reach my goal.
I also have a sight reading piece that I need to brush up on too!
