To make #fastplaying runs sound more brilliant, I make sure to vibrate the final top note. Sometimes my tendency is to be relieved the run is over and then stumble into the next part; however, brilliance and expression is lost this way. This trains me to begin the string crossings earlier so I will arrive on the new string with less impact thereby making the passage smooth and even. Making a #fastplaying passage feel slow by understanding the underlying shifts and interval structure. This passage is from #lagazzaladra #overture by #rossini mm 446-453, but can be generalized for any passage with repeated figuration over #chordchanges These steps can be generalized for similar passages in other pieces: 5 videos: 1) Play the first note of each measure. Since this passage is in the high register, I practice in lower octaves to establish the pitch clearly in my mind. ~swipe left~ 2) Practice the underlying shift. In this passage, the 2nd finger makes the underlying shift. I practice these notes (B, C#) in a single position first so I can hear the notes clearly, then I play these notes with the performance fingering, which includes the shift. ~swipe left~ 3) Repeat the first interval of each measure. This helps with intonation as well as finger placement. ~swipe left~ 4) Complete measures close to performance tempo with pauses between each measure. Shift carefully between measures and continue only after the shift is secure. Play each measure several times, then only once each, pausing before each measure. ~swipe left~ 5) Performance version - The better I understand the underlying shifts and intervals, the slower the passage feels when I play it even though the notes go by quickly! Accent #patternpractice is one of the most effective #practicestrategies to build ease, clarity, and memory strength in #fastplaying pieces. Here are just a few ways I practice #preludio from #partita no 3 in #emajor #bwv1006 by #jsbach (mm 29-42) 6 videos: 1) Beginner - accent each main beat ~swipe left~ 2) Advanced - accent once per beat but not the main beat. For this example I accent the last note of each beat. ~swipe left~ 3) Expert - Accent every third note - this effectively changes the meter from 3/4 to 12/8. Accent patterns which change the meter take some getting used to. ~swipe left~ 4) Insane! - 5 note accent groups! The accent converges in the natural meter every 5 measures! ~swipe left~ 5) Ultimate - Accent every 7th note! #accenting notes in a #16thnotes #fastplaying passage Example: #violinconcerto in #aminor by J. B. #accolay measures 90-92. 5 videos: 1) Accents are prepared by pushing up with the thumb. This pushes the stick close to the hair. There will be a slight pressure of the stick against the index finger; however the index should not be active. Push only upward with the thumb. This will keep the arm and shoulder relaxed through the accent. I practice silent accents to study the accent preparation without sound - then I move the bow slightly on the release to sound the note. ~swipe left~ 2) Practice with the two note slur. Ensure both notes receive little bow. This is not a bow speed accent. ~swipe left~ 3) Practice all the notes in the accented part. The thumb preparation happens before the note, not when the note sounds. ~swipe left~ 4) Performance version. Accents are clear. Tone is pure throughout the passage. #slowpractice under #performance conditions For #fastplaying passages I practice #undertempo with #tinybow strokes which have #stickysounds This prepares #qualitysound as the passage gets #fasterandfaster Here’s an example of a #practiceroutine I use and teach my #violinstudents learning J.B Accolay’s #violinconcerto in #aminor 5 videos: 1) Practice half measures with pauses. Include all #dynamics (don’t wait until the passage is learned to do the #crescendo and #decrescendo ~swipe left~ 2) Slightly faster. One measure at a time. ~swipe left~ 3) Slightly faster. No pauses. Don’t forget dynamics! ~swipe left~ 4) Slightly faster, still under tempo. Notice how the small sticky bows are starting to sound “normal” ~swipe left~ 5) Performance version. Notes are clear and brilliant as a result of training the small bow strokes. I feel in control of the bow. Dynamics sound natural and clear as a result of including them all along. Swipe back to video 1 and notice how I am using the same amount of bow at every speed! This is to anyone who says that Canadian musicians suck.

Sure, Canada gave the world Celine Dion, Nickelback and Justin Bieber, but these bad@$$es more than make up for them. They got some really great songs, my favorites being Little Fugue and Vivaldi's Wint-HOLYS**TTHAT'SHIGH.
