Hey what if we all held hands and lived happily ever after
IT SAYS THAT BIANCA IS THE DIRECTOR
( I don't know if any of this is considered canon in the VIP world but it's real to ME!)
are we ready to have a conversation about how the increase in prosthetics used in Season 3 of Very Important People brought with it a weird and statistically improbable slant of, out of 13 episodes aired as of posting, 5 out of 7 performers of colour having had anthropomorphic costumes - and not a single white performer has gotten anything more extreme than being made into a baby or being given a large exterior brain?
and also why the dog and cat specifically were both played by Black women?
to be clear: I am not accusing dropout.tv of being a bunch of racists.
I am calling out dropout.tv for not having a single person take a step back and go "...huh I wonder what this says about our internal biases that this didn't occur to anyone as being highly weird". because this is weird and genuinely disappointing from a brand that features so many incredible non-white performers. they may be a smaller corporation, but that does not excuse them for doing something that disney and pixar have also been (rightfully) called out over.
‘The Princess & The Frog’ has been my favourite movie for years. I vividly remember feeling mesmerised watching its premiere in cinema…
a friend was kind enough to share their dropout password with me so ive been slowly but surely watching very important people and i just wanted to say the jasper and casper episode is what it feels like to me as an asexual person whenever anyone talks about sex in general. just entirely nonsensical and incomprehensible and more than a little unpleasant to sit through.
VIP, POC, and Inhumanity
Reccently on a comment chain about how Dropout, for all it's flaws, does *not* read to me as anti-transfemmine, someone upset at me pointing out Persephone's role in D20 and subsequent apperence on other shows brought up, amung one relevent point I still need to look into, a barrage of other attacks on the character of Dropout on the whole, which I'd like to seriously take a look at. Starting with one example that has been bothering me; the claim that on the VIP show, white and white-passing actors play humans in sily costumes while all, and yes the claim was ALL, darker-skinned performers are given much more inhuman, totally covering makovers. I initially bristled at this, but have decided, hey let's just check. Easy enough to do, right? Let's check. For season 1, there is really just one inhuman level makover, Iffy as Denzel.
You might think that's a bad look, but only really if you consider Iffy the only person of color in the first season, which of course, would be ignoring Rashawn Nadine Scott as Martha Tops, and depending on how you wanna count it, because TBH I do not know where the line is drawn, Jiavani and Oscar as Jasper and Casper, They aren't white but maybe people of color is only supposed to mean black people? Zac Oyama is also japanese but I'm sure he comes off as too "white passing" to be seriously considered by this argument.
Sure, I suppose having 2(or 4) of your first 16 guests as the first season might come off as problematic to some, but I think it just comes down to shooting scedules and who knows who, given how little time it sees VIP has to actually shoot, the whole thing seems pretty damn rushed to be honest. This is also assuming we don't count Pig #2, played by Ally Beardsly, as inhman enough to count towards this argument? I'm trying to play fair here and I think if you're coming at this with a color-based lens, since the pig is already very close to ally's natrual skin tone it might not be inhuman ENOUGH. But if you do, chalk it up a a subjective first paleskinned inhuman?
This post is gonna require reblogging to include other seasons because we're gonna need more than 10 pictures, consider this just the Season 1 Assessment. If you're going to comment, please clerify if you are looking at the whole thing or just season 1, or whatever you see. I'm gonna reblog this quick with the other seasons.
I need someone to sell me on Very Important People. I’ve watched the first episode and the Bobby Moynihan episode and snippets of all the others and only ever found myself enjoying the out of context bits and Vic’s character breaks so I need just a push over the edge. what episode will get me. please I want to like this show I just need someone to tell me how
Tony Hawk in the bts of your silly little interview show on Dropout.tv?
