He stopped in his tracks, completely entranced by the centuries old ink painting. He stepped closer to the painting; he felt more than saw Sass peek out from his pocket.
The placket beside the painting said the painting was from sometime during the Han Dynasty. But it had little other information; the artist was unknown, as was the subject.
His eyes darted back to the painting. The subject was unknown, but there was something so achingly familiar about the man in the painting. He could feel something at the edges of his mind, like the remnants of a dream or memory that he couldn’t quite reach. All he could do was drink in the image.
Even thousands of years old, the ink was still bold and vibrant. And the pigments almost seemed to shimmer. There was something almost... almost magic about it. The lines were done with such grace and precision, he could almost see the man's teal and green robes swirling around him. The painter had even captured the designs embroidered into the man’s robes with excruciating detail…
He squinted.
There… there were what looked like serpents and scales embroidered onto the man’s robes. And there was a symbol too. One that was so familiar. One he knew he had seen before…
“He was one of mine,” a soft voice whispered.
“Sass?” He didn’t dare look down. He didn’t dare speak above a whisper. He didn’t want anyone to notice Sass, not that the museum was very busy on a Monday morning…
“Many, many centuries ago… he was not my first. But he was among my earliest wielders.”
Was that why he had been so drawn to the painting? To the art museum?
He dared a glance down at Sass, who looked up at him from his pocket, nodding silently in response to his unspoken question.
He needed to show… “Marinette?” He turned, but there was no sight of her in the room. She had been right behind him, looking at a statue… He hurried into the next room and the room after that.
Finally, he found her.
She was staring at a painting, not unlike the one he had been looking at just moments before. It even had the same man in teal robes in it. But he wasn’t alone…
“Do you think,” Marinette asked, slipping her hand into his, her gaze never wavering from the woman in the painting, dressed in grey and pink robes, “it’s possible to remember memories that aren’t yours?”
