This one is done very nicely, with high school best friends and a very moving confession full of raw emotion (and giving in to “forbidden” attraction). Caught By the Sun by metal_eye / @metal-eye (M, 19K) Sometimes you just stumble on a fic that moves you deeply and makes you feel a lot and sits with you after you’ve finished it. This was one of those fics for me. It’s beautifully written in a quiet, poetic way. It’s thoughtful, and intimate, and full of memories that are both melancholy and beautiful in all the right ways and at all the right times. And it’s a fic that’s not been read nearly enough. High School/growing up together

Like An Endless Summer by objectlesson (E, 87K) There are so many thing I loved about this fic from the summer camp setting, to the trope of Harry returning to camp older and hotter, to the way the other boys filter in and out of the story, to the way the author writes the emotions and overwhelm, to the hot af smut. It’s just a great read (and there’s 6K smutty follow up fic as a special treat). IIRC, Louis is 20, Harry is 18 / Summer camp counsellors (this fic has been deleted, link is to a download)

Good Enough to Eat by objectlesson (E, 7K) This author always does such a good job with depicting young, queer love and the way their characters experience the overwhelm of realizing they’re not straight, realizing the’ve met their Person, pining, and giving in. I love a lot of their fics, but I think this is my favorite of them. (this fic has been deleted, link is to a download)

Atlas At Last by louisandthealien (M, 83K) I swear I would read this author’s grocery list. I just love everything they write. This one is a 1970s coming of age road trip fic. I really enjoyed the OT5 friendships, excellent dialogue, and Harry and Louis discovering themselves and each other. 

You Drive Me Crazy (I Just Can’t Sleep) by objectlesson (E, 19K) My favorite fics from this author are their X-Factor era ones. They do such a good job of capturing teenage lust and overwhelm and their characterizations feel so solid. Sleepwalking Louis can’t seem to stay out of Harry’s bed. Harry really doesn’t mind. (this fic has been deleted, link is to a download)

Born to Make You Happy by objectlesson (E, 26K) This author writes some of the best xfactor canon fic out there. The way they write Harry is in this one gives you such a real sense of him in all his awkwardness and intense infatuation for Louis. That Harry would do anything to make Louis notice him. Even if that means embarrassing himself. (this fic has been deleted, link is to a download)

Taste of a Poison Paradise by objectlesson (E, 10K) Just gorgeous writing, sweet and sexy af. (this fic has been deleted, link is to a download)

You Don't Need Me To Show The Way by LoadedGunn (E, 7K) Not really a first time fic, but it’s canon, Harry’s first time riding Louis, and it’s such a sexy fic, I’m throwing it in the mix. Enjoy! Harry is 17, Louis is 19.

Unbelievers by isthatyoularry (E, 137K) Oooh, this one is so good. High school Au, footie, enemies with benefits, so much sexual tension (and just tension), and complex characters. Another one I’ve read more than once.

Nicotine by KrisStylinson (E, 32K) “Bad Boy Harry” who really is a good guy. This was written at a time when there were a lot of fics with this characterization of Harry. I was pretty new to reading fic when I read this one, so my memory of it could be really off, but I liked it a lot back then –– tagging it as having really good smut and great banter. 

Dream Awake by protagonist_m (M, 31K) This fic…I just….the writing is so lovely. It’s just one of those fics where I had to slow down and really savor the writing. And “hazy” is really the perfect descriptor as it drifts between memories and current moments. Link is to a download. 

Learning to Breathe by youcomecrash (E, 111K) Uni football player Harry and Louis. I read this a long time ago and I’m afraid my notes only say “ good angst, good first time smut” 🙈Past me is not very helpful.

It’s just beautifully written and wonderfully moving. Virgin Harry.

Never content to stay in one place for long, a few months down south researching for his novel seemed like an idyllic, slow-paced summer to Louis. He wasn't ready for the blistering heat, the backbreaking work of watermelon picking, or how stifling the attitudes in rural Georgia would feel. And he definitely hadn’t anticipated falling in love with the farmer’s son.

The summer of 1946 would turn out to be everything worth writing about.

The Case Of The (Definitely Not Haunted) Styles Mansion by BriaMaria / @briannamarguerite (E, 40K) This author is terrific, and this is a Nancy Drew mystery, AND it’s Marcel. I mean…COME ON! I’ve read this one a couple of times and I love it. Marcel is 28 and the virgin in this one. 

Soul of the Sea by vurdoc (E, 33K) Lovely writing, unique story with supernatural elements. I really enjoyed getting lost in this quirky gothic romance for a while. No ages specified, but they read as young adults. Virgin Harry.   

knock knock, I love you by beautlouis / @watercherrwi (E, 86K) This is a fun, sexy fic with uni-aged Larry and virgin Harry. It’s got a bit of all the good stuff including comeplay, friends to lovers, and Louis encouraging Harry’s terrible knock knock jokes!

Victorian Boy by audreyheart (E, 102K) For anyone that hasn’t read this yet, it’s delightfully unique and layered with a little of everything – hate to love, romance, intrigue, action, betrayal, sex, and more. It’s well written, sexy – in a wonderfully Victorian way, and keeps you guessing until the very end. Harry and Louis’ ages aren’t specified as far as I can recall, but they’re young adults (virgin Harry).

Cupid Chokehold by bluelemur (E, 35K) Ok…this is another I read a really long time ago and my only notes were about the smut (sorry 🙈), so I can’t guarantee you anything BUT….I liked it a lot at one point. LOL! And I love the idea of a Cupid trying to match supposed soulmates, but falling for one of them instead. Again, young adults, but Louis is a Cupid so technically he’s really old although he’s the virgin. 

Down On the Farm by @kingsofeverything (E, 5K) This is just a slow, sweet, and gentle fic. The descriptions of the setting and the nighttime and the way Harry does everything - from the way he talks to the way he hangs up their wet clothes – all feel so gentle and loving. Even the smut is sexy and tender. I believe they’re college-aged in this one and Harry’s a virgin. 

Just Let Me by @helloamhere (E, 15K) I don’t know how many ways to say this author writes like a dream, but I can’t help recommending them again. The characterizations are so lovely in this one and I really enjoyed the pining and sense of hurt/comfort woven through this fic. Again, no exact ages, but it reads like young adults. Louis is a virgin.

Pull Me Under by zarah5 (E, 140K) One of the very first fics I read coming into this fandom and wow, what an intro. This author is one of my favorites and everything they write is so good. This one has some of the sexiest smut scenes on top of also being wonderfully paced, and well-written. Louis not exactly a virgin in this, but as his character says, “He’s twenty-two, twenty-two, and he’s a goddamn virgin. At least in the way that counts, the way that matters to him. With boys”. Can I lay by your side? by Star_Henderson / @tommosgun (E, 60K) There are a few of this author’s fics that I’ve read multiple times. This is one of them. It’s just sexy and soft and a little heartbreaking. But a happy ending, of course! Harry is’t exactly a virgin, but this is his first time with a man and it’s such a lovely fic, I’m including it. 

Sail Across Me by iwillpaintasongforlou (E, 22K) I actually haven’t read this one, but @cuethetommo suggested it (virgin Harry)

Harry is a prince that is about to be forced into marriage against his will and running away to sea seems like a much better option. Louis is the captain of the infamous pirate ship The Rogue and he has a thing for helping defenseless creatures. Especially when they’re as pretty as this one.

There are obviously a lot of fics where the boys are much younger teens, but I’ve left those out since you were pretty specific about age range.
