i’ve wanted to make this post for ages but more as an essay than informal like this is but i don’t rlly have any time so??? anyways im putting this under the cut bc it’s going to be Incredibly Long and probably slightly confusing.

i don’t know if anyone knows about Aristotle’s virtue theory but a brief explanation (also wider reading) would be that basically our actions are decided using a bunch of things including our practical wisdom (i.e. what we know is good & bad + how to act in context), virtues, ethos, habit (of choosing the right actions for a situation), having the right reason and eudaimonia which is ‘the good life’ or moral life we all strive for. In short, the eudaimonic person must learn from habit how to deal with certain situations properly and make the righteous choice for good and contextualized reasons. Honestly this isn’t the best explanation but it’s a really complex theory and i only want to use it to talk about specific lines so yeah i recommend that reading if you’re confused.

the reason this connection jumped out at me was because of the line ‘do you regret?’ ‘i’d do it again’ because Aristotle talks a lot about regret in the theory when referring to acting ignorantly. if you act based on ignorance then you can be morally redeemed if you regret the action (because it becomes involuntary). however, marvin doesn’t regret loving Whizzer so his love is completely voluntary meaning that he’s accepted both himself and learned how to love properly which completes his character arc into a more morally sound person.

another line i thought was significant was ‘of all the lesser passions we like fighting most’ which also appears in virtue theory because there’s a table of passions and basically Aristotle states that we should try and cater our reactions depending on context and we shouldn’t be too excessive or deprived if the situation doesn’t call for it. as a random example the passion humor in excess is buffoonish and deprived is boorish and in the middle is wit. from this we can take that both whizzer and marvin tend to be excessive and deficient and never really react according to the situations (that whole ‘kill your mother’ sequence Yikes!!) the only time they really act w/o doing this is probably during the bar mitzvah and the Last Song which is more of a reflection anyway. point is they are Super Flawed people and the ways in which they react so brashly but also so nonchalantly gives this impression.

in honesty the most balanced characters are the lesbians and i kind of see them as the ideal relationship anyway. they kind of embody the eudaimonic person because not only do they react well to situations and stuff they also kind of act as the bringing together of marvin and whizzer. also if we treat the first and second acts as separate you could argue that trina and mendel’s ‘making a home’ also gives off a similar vibe of eudaimonic people.

lastly, i wanted to talk quickly abt jason bc virtue theory also talks about forming good habits at a young age and obviously jason’s growth is super important to the narrative. we can see trina and marvins desire for jason to grow up being a good kid (please see a psychiatrist & also make friends & go outside and all that stuff). if mendel is supposed to be his guidance this makes sense considering how level-headed he is w/ basically everything in the story. whizzer also makes a good impression on jason but mainly because of possible shared hatred of marvin anyways whizzer is sort of jasons teacher in that he learns how to be more outgoing and excited (i.e. excess) and mendel is more subdued (i.e. deprived) showing us that the reason jason is super balanced and actually reacts Properly is because of the aspects his taken from all these different family members.

Okay this is the end if you have any more ideas about this sort of thing please message me im a massive philosophy nerd and talking about morality in falsettos is super interesting!!!

Virtue Theory

Deontological (or teleological? Nobody knows!), normative, subjective theory of morality. An ethical system based on defining the personal qualities that make a person moral. 

If a person becomes moral, their actions follow will naturally become moral, thus the definition of good does not matter for him. However, what a moral character is falls under cultural relativity. 

According to Aristotle, we move towards a purpose: to survive, reproduce, to fit in to and help society, use of rational thinking. Ultimately, we should aim to be happy, or achieve Eudamonia. Eudamonia is human flourishing, an intrinsic good, not permanent, must always be striven for. One aspect of Eudamonia is social: enabling people to live together. 

“Happiness is the activity of the soul in accordance with virtue” - Aristotle (good is fulfilling telos). 

“Happiness then is something final and self-sufficient, and is the end of an action” - Aristotle. 

Virtuous actions are doing the right thing at the right time in the right way by the right amount. 

The focus on a person’s character rather than their specific actions:

The theory is described as a ‘holistic view of humanity’, considering both reason and emotions.

Correct ethos (character) leads to correct hexis (manner and disposition). 

Since ‘good’ is based on character, one has incentive, and character becomes the focus.  

The development of virtues is a lifelong process, so can’t be defined by single events. 

“For one swallow does not make a summer” - one good act does not make a good person. 

Actions must be done until it becomes a habit and thus ingrained into our own character.

We do this by copying a moral exemplar: “It takes a man to make a man” - Aristotle. 

Therefore it’s practical, removes bad instincts, and humans have chances for development. It’s both universal and practical. ‘Friendliness’ is universal, but can be applied to a friend: personal. 

It requires people to be healthy, studying ethics and/or politics, and freedom. Wisdom provides this. A truly virtuous person enjoys actually doing good things, not just any good consequences. 

Arete: the development and cultivation of moral, intellectual and physical viruses. 

“It is no easy task to do good. For in everything, it is no easy task to find the middle.” - Aristotle. 

There are three kinds of people regarding being virtuous. 

Sophrons do it naturally, effortlessly. 

Enkrates are those which are tempted by vices, but are strong enough to remain in the mean. 

Akrates are akrasia, meaning incontinent, a ‘weak willed person’, tempted by vices. The majority. 

Aristotle’s moral virtues (based on the deficiency; the excess and the mean):

The theory is proposed in the Nicomachean Ethics. The golden mean is the correct point along a scale of deficiency to excess, regarding that specific situation, which would produce the best, or most good actions. The virtues don’t define the response, they define the choosing of the response. 

“Virtue then is a state of character concerned with choice, lying in a mean. It is a meaning between two vices, that which depends on excess and that which depends on deficit.” - Aristotle. 

Four cardinal virtues: temperance, courage, sense of justice, and wisdom (which guides the rest). 

“Wisdom, thoroughly learned, will never be forgotten” - Pythagoras, influenced by Aristotle. 

Justice is unique as it is a virtue in itself, not on a scale. Injustice is a total vice, not part of one. 

Intellectual virtues are developed by good education, and include insight/intelligence, scientific knowledge, wisdom, artistic endeavour via reason, prudence ("right reason applied to practice").

Moral virtues are acquired by habit, and they are found in the golden mean, between excess/deficit. 

Courage (rashness/cowardice), 

temperance (licentiousness, insensibility), 

liberality (prodigality, illiberality), 

generosity (vulgarity, pettiness), 

pride (vanity, humility), 

proper ambition (over-ambition, lack of ambition), 

truthfulness (boastfulness, understatement), 

patience (irascibility, spiritless), 

wittiness (buffoonery, boorishness), 

friendliness (obsequiousness, cantankerousness), 

modesty (bashfulness, shamelessness),

indignation (spitefulness, callousness). 

Jesus’ teachings on virtues (the Beatitudes):

Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount introduced the beatitudes: virtues, the owner of whom is ‘blessed’. 

“There are six things the Lord hates...haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.” - Proverbs 6:16-19. 

The virtues:

Poor in spirit--mental, physical and spiritually deprived, leading to awareness of the place compared to God, their owner, however Aristotle would compare this to the ice of humility. 

Mourning--regret over the obvious, distance from God, and state of the world. Not a good focus!

Meek--could be self control, not boastfulness, more temperance, but perhaps a bit too little. 

Hungry and thirst for righteousness--on the same line as justice, very good. 

Merciful--perhaps erases the righteousness, but also justice in its own sense, not cruel.

Pure in heart--Charitable, or not too selfish. Align with generosity, but also private, so not vulgar. 

Peacemakers--Perhaps aligned with the idea of justice, traditionally for the Messiah. 

Persecuted for the sake of righteousness--both justice and courage, but moves towards rashness. 

Virtues are not a practical guide to moral behaviour: decisions are very difficult to make, and being virtuous doesn’t change the fact that you may come across situations that need more than virtues. They are more arbitrary, vague, and lacks focus on actual situations, which means it’s not suitable alone. It points out that some people struggle too. 

“We value virtue but do not discuss it...get little of our attention.” - Steinbeck (no incentive, despite Eudamonia)

Issue of cultural relativism (ideas on the good virtues are not universal): everyone has different ideas of virtues, and what a good result is, role model choice. It highlights that there’s no verification method of what a ‘good act’ is. Or virtues are often based on the laws: could the theory therefore be based on laws? Courage is subjective (is courage tolerating brutality, and surviving it, or fighting brutality?)

Virtues can be used for immoral acts: in itself, wanting virtues for Eudamonia, yourself, is ‘selfish’. Furthermore, there may be conflicting virtues, like being loyal to faith, and telling the truth. Since the actions/consequences don’t matter,.
