Photo by @amivitale. A huge gorilla made out of thatch sits near Volcanoes National Park, home to five of the eight volcanoes in the thickly forested Virunga Mountains — Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo. In Rwanda, the $1,500 permit per-person to track gorillas allows for an hour’s interaction with the animals. The treks are carefully controlled - only 96 permits are available each day, and each hike is restricted to eight people.
