as navratri comes to a close, here are some of my favourite dolls from our golu this year, and the stories behind them.
this is oppiliappan (or uppliappan), a vishnu temple close to kumbakonam. one of the tales associated with this temple is that markandeya told vishnu that his daughter didn’t know how to cook with salt, in an attempt to dissaude him from marrying her (cuz in usual vishnu fashion, he came to them as an old man). vishnu agrees and reveals his true form — then they get married. so all the prasadam in this temple doesn’t have any salt. also the temple elephant is a cutie-patootie.
krishna’s vishwaroopam. no explanation needed haha. the only mahabharat themed doll this year. we have one of karna sitting on parshuram’s lap too, but there wasn’t enough space 🥲
sowriraja perumal - the one with luscious locks. the legend is that a visiting king gifted a garland to the deity — which the temple priest unwillingly gave away to his lover. the priest got the garland and put it back because the king decided to visit again. the king pulls out a lock of hair from the garland and asks the priest where it came from. in fright, he says that it is vishnu’s. the king obviously thinks he’s lying and yanks the head of the statue. to his surprise, he finds it bleeding. so, vishnu played along to protect the priest.
ekambareshwarar — where shiva is worshipped as the element of earth. however, my cousin on unwrapping this doll, took one look at the tree and said it looked like broccoli. henceforth, he is “broccoli shiva” 😌 (jkjk)
the characters of ponniyin selvan!!!! probably my favourite of this year’s dolls. i kinda broke kundavai while unwrapping her though. it’s fine, she’s been reanimated with feviquick 👍
