⁣ Canon EOS 250D | 18mm | 1/60s | f/16 | ISO 100⁣ Taken on 27/07/2020.⁣ ⁣ Val Formazza is the extreme offshoot of the Piedmont region, a peg stuck right into Switzerland that is connected through the Graies mountain pass. It was once a major trade route where a mule track linked the Swiss Valais canton through the Graies Pass and all the way to Lombardy.⁣ ⁣ Having arrived at Riale, the northernmost village in the whole of Piedmont at 1,730 metres above sea level, I went for a peaceful stroll through the bucolic pastures of the plain and arrived at Lake Morasco, a dam built between 1936 and 1940 that feeds the Ponte power station and produces sufficient energy for 30,000 families.⁣ ⁣ From there I went on a ring-shaped walk along the shores of the lake in an awesome alpine environment that left my jaw well and truly dropped. This shot best sums up the extraordinary beauty and majesty of the Alps.⁣ ⁣ 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲:⁣ ⁣ First take a train from Milan or Novara to Domodossola. Then catch a bus (Comazzibus) to Riale. The bus will only stop at the village during the summer while schools are on break. Rotaia abbandonata all'antica Cava. L’antica Cava di Marmo di Ornavasso fa parte di un complesso storico-archeologico e naturalistico di straordinario interesse, che richiama ogni anno migliaia di turisti e di visitatori che vogliono toccare con mano questi luoghi ricchi di storia e di arte. L'origine e l'edificazione del Santuario dedicato all'Immacolata Concezione di Maria Vergine, detto comunemente "Della Guardia", si devono al canone per l'edilizia religiosa, definito dal Cardinale Carlo Borromeo, che fino ad oltre il XVIII secolo veniva usato in tutto il Ducato di Milano e quindi anche a Ornavasso. Il Santuario "Della Guardia" prende il nome dal promontorio omonimo su cui sorge, così chiamato ancora oggi a causa della presenza di un'antica torre di segnalazione risalente ai primi anni del XIV° secolo, che faceva parte di un sistema difensivo di avvistamento composto da torri comunicanti visivamente fra loro. Le torri furono erette per volere della famiglia dei Barbavara d'Ornavasso, feudatari di tutta la Valle d'Ossola, per potere avvertire, mediante l'accensione di fuochi, tutte le popolazioni ossolane evitando in tal modo la sorpresa nel caso di eventuali attacchi da parte degli Svizzeri predoni che imperversavano in tutta la valle. La chiesa, di proporzioni considerevoli, è caratterizzata da una forma ottagonale e da una costruzione in marmo di Ornavasso è stata costruita dove esisteva, fin dal 1600, una cappelletta dedicata alla Beata Vergine. La tradizione popolare dice che una ragazzina obbligata dalla matrigna ad andare tutti i giorni a pascolare le pecore, a volte senza i necessari alimenti, trovasse davanti alla sacra Immagine la quantità di pane sufficiente per la giornata. Oltre a ciò la ragazza era anche muta e grazie al miracoloso intervento di Maria, le fu dato il dono della parola. Durante i secoli molti altri avvenimenti furono ritenuti miracolosi. Questi eventi portarono il popolo di Ornavasso a voler erigere attorno alla cappelletta un "tavolato a foggia d'Oratorio", creando così uno spazio coperto per potervi celebrare la messa. ⁣ Canon EOS 250D | 24mm | 1/40s | f/5.6 | ISO 200⁣ Taken on 26/01/2020.⁣ ⁣ Vogogna is a hidden medieval gem in the Ossola area in the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola province that will no doubt take your breath away.⁣ ⁣ The Palazzo Pretorio, built in 1348 by Giovanni Visconti, archbishop of Milan, features in my photo and was the centre of the administrative and political life of the village. Until 1819, it was the seat of the Lower Ossola government. It was subsequently used as a town hall until 1979. After restoration, it was reopened to the public as a multifunctional centre in 1998.⁣ ⁣ This small 'palazzetto', which is supported by pointed arches resting on squat columns, follows the architectural model called the 'broletto lombardo' that can be seen in cities in Lombardy like Milan, Lodi and Pavia.⁣ ⁣ This beautiful building has an upper hall where the assemblies of the administration of justice used to take place and a covered space below that used to be a market place. It was originally decorated with coats of arms and engravings which were partly destroyed during the revolutionary uprisings in 1789. ⁣ Canon EOS 250D | 18mm | 1/80s | f/16 | ISO 100⁣ Taken on 29/07/2020.⁣ ⁣ And this is the lovely Lago d'Antrona!⁣ ⁣ I took this photo while following the 'Giro del Lago' ('Lake Route') that offers many panoramic views of the lake, forest and surrounding mountains — a true gift for budding photographers like me.⁣ ⁣ The lake has a dark past, though, as it was formed by a huge landslide in 1642 that crashed down on the underlying plateau and collided with some of the houses in the hamlets of Grognasca and Case, burying 95 inhabitants with no chance to escape. This natural disaster led to the valley becoming barraged, blocking the passage of the River Troncone and resulting in the mass of earth widening from below, which is how Lago d'Antrona was formed.⁣ ⁣ The 8km-walk around the perimetre of the lake is nonetheless completely safe and would without a doubt be an unforgettable experience for any visitor.⁣ ⁣ 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲:⁣ See my previous post for how to arrive at Lago d'Antrona. It came into being in 1928 with the merging of two pre-existing Ossola municipalities, Antrona Piana and Schieranco, both with their own rich historical heritage.⁣ ⁣ The territory of the town, together with that of the municipality of Borgomezzavalle, falls within the Upper Valle Antrona Natural Park, one of the parts of the Val d’Ossola that is protected and preserved by the Ossola Protected Areas Management Body.⁣ ⁣ From spring to autumn, Antrona Schieranco is an ideal starting point for excursions to the lakes that are scattered over the nearby mountains and to hidden hamlets with houses made of wood and stone that are so picturesque and charming, allowing them to blend in with the natural environment.⁣ ⁣ 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲:⁣ ⁣ Catch a bus from Domodossola with 'Comazzi' to Antrona Schieranco, which is the final stop.
