Phosphenes could help the blind to see

The stars and colours you see when you rub your eyes are called phosphenes, derived from the Greek “phos” (light) and “phainein” (to show). They’re an optical phenomenon characterised by seeing light when there’s no light entering the eye, most commonly induced by rubbing your eyes—the pressure simulates cells in the retina, sending signals to the brain and creating the illusion of light. Phosphenes can also be induced by a blow to the head or a severe sneeze, and even during mediation—in Buddhist philosophy, they’re known as “nimitta”. They’re also experienced by prisoners who are deprived of sensory input, nicknamed the “prisoner’s cinema”. However, what’s really interestings is that phosphenes can be experienced by anyone whose brain is capable of processing light—even blind people who could once see. A visual prosthesis was successfully developed in 1974 that allowed blind people to see Braille spots using electrically-produced phosphenes, and more recently, researchers have created a neuroprosthesis, or “brain-computer interface”, that restores limited vision to the blind by utilising the phenomenon of phosphenes.
