«Reading Dick & Jane with Me, is an artist’s book created to interrupt the authority of old elementary school textbooks called The Dick and Jane Readers. These textbooks of the 1940's and 1950's, used to teach reading, presented a white upper middle class suburban family as normal life for most Americans. Although the average American at that time was working class, the artist as a young girl thought these depictions meant that her family must be an aberration outside normal family life. Simple, repetitive sentences are constructed to simulate the rhythm of the old readers. Fragments of snapshots of the artist’s brothers and sisters and children from her neighborhood stand in for elementary school students who now "talk back."» ― Clarissa Sligh

Since its inception in 1971, the Visual Studies Workshop Press has been a vanguard of alternative perspectives, both in practice and politics. This catalogue of work produced at the Visual Studies Workshop Press presents an opportunity to consider a diverse range of materials produced over the past thirty-seven years, to see the results of a program that has insisted on the importance of the artistic process, and to celebrate a discipline-forming body of work that is largely the vision of Joan and Nathan Lyons. The catalogue includes color images of many of the books along with statements by their authors. Through these vignettes of particular works, accompanied by a timeline, it offers a narrative history of the press and describes an important part of the development of artists’ books in North America. This volume offers a useful addition to the growing literature about contemporary artists’ books. Published by Visual Studies Workshop. 175 pages
