🎥 1928: Lilac Time (silent romantic drama) starring Gary Cooper, Colleen Moore and Eddie Clayton. While it was shot without dialogue, it was one of the first major films released with a synchronized musical score and sound effects on Vitaphone records.

• In WWI a British fighter ace, Captain Philip Blythe (Cooper), falls in love with local farm girl Jeannine (Moore) while stationed in France. But the reality of combat intrudes upon the romance when Blythe is shot down by an enemy pilot (Clayton).

Jeannine, who promised to wait for Blythe to return, goes in search of him when she learns that he crash landed. Upon discovering only the wreckage of his plane, she journeys to Paris in hope of finding him in one of the hospitals. (First National Pictures)

These movie ads appeared in the February 22, 1929 issue of the Princeton Herald. In addition to the "all-talking picture" advertised on the right side of the clipping, several shows used "Vitaphone," a technology that synced sound effects and music to pictures, but did not necessarily include audio dialogue. With these films, the selling point included being able to both "see and hear" the action, whether or not one could hear the actors speak.

Princeton University students were not impressed with these early movies with sound. An editorial in the Daily Princetonian warned a few days later of the potential for overuse of this new technology: "the sound should be discriminatingly used; to hear the clatter of horses' hoofs, the banging of a door, the heaving of a sigh, would be ridiculous." So far, the writer said, the movies themselves hadn't been very good. "Dialogue as used so far has been very flat; inevitably it tends to become mere exposition, to consist of type phrases, or gang parlance for local color."
