THE VIZIR
by Bastien Grivet
Hello Everyone
So I’ve been absent and here’s why...
As some of you know who follow this blog for awhile, you’ve heard me talk about my dachshund Vizir from time to time. She passed away unexpectedly and suddenly approx. two weeks ago. She was just 9 years old, not too old for a dachshund. She had been having bouts of sickness that would come and go and then one night I had to rush her to the emergency vet because things got bad quickly. It turned out that she had a mass on her spleen and was bleeding internally and the vet felt there was a very good chance for it being HSA (a type of cancer that symptoms come on very suddenly and fatal). I was told she had a 50% chance of making it through surgery and that if it did turn out to be cancer, she’d have maybe a month left. With this knowledge, I made the difficult decision to lay her to rest. This was so unexpected that it was hard and I just sort of let everything back up.
2020 has been a sucky year for me personally and for the globe.
I apologize for letting your mail go unanswered and not updating. I am going to slowly be getting back to that now.
Here’s my girl:
Who was Napoleon’s favourite horse?
The obvious answer you’ll find is Marengo. However, there has been some minor studies that wonder if Marengo ever really existed or was a amalgamation of several different horses. I’ve also seen it being listed that he had a few favorite parade horses, their names escape me right now. I think there was a horse named “Marie” that he was supposedly fond of. Also Vizir, the one on display at the Army Museum in Paris, has been listed as a favorite.
Following the Napoleon and animals train of thought, didn't Napoleon have a soft spot for horses? Especially Arab horses like Marengo- though he was not exactly a pro in horsemanship
Napoleon had a few favorites in his horses. I’ve read Desiree among the more obvious two, Marengo and Vizir (which also happens to be my dachshund’s name). He did prefer Arabian horses, mostly I think for their sureness in battle and the like. The conditioning Napoleon’s horses went through in order to be his horse was intensive. It took months of shooting loud noises near them and throwing things at them to train them.
Unfortunately, Napoleon sucked as a horse-man. There’s tons of stories on his poor riding skills. It’s only in the movie Monsieur N that the actor actually seems to ride how Napoleon did, loose reigns. There’s an anecdote that Napoleon was getting help getting on his horse and ended up falling off the other side immediately. Also one of him trying to drive a carriage at Malmaison and getting thrown into a tree and knocking himself out.
