This quote by Carl Sagan so eloquently describes the cruel conundrum of human existence and nature. Despite all that we have learnt about the universe around us over the past 4,000 years, we still fail to appreciate just how fragile our planet and civilisation is, and consequently we often do not act in our own collective self-interest. As Sagan outlines, when viewed from the perspective of our Solar System, let alone the wider galaxy or universe, the disputes of individuals and nations are insignificant. Yet simultaneously this speech seems to highlight the ever-pressing need to protect this small and fragile enclave of life.
