Vocabulary notes
I’m about to start a new vocabulary notebook and I can’t decide on the system of arranging the new words. I know there are many good tips but I’m still searching for the perfect solution.
When I work with a text or an article I like to have the new words from them written down together. It saves time and I can concentrate on reading and not think about the best category for every word. Besides, I can re-read the text later not spending time looking for the words in different parts of my notebook. What I usually do is I read a text and write down its title and all the unfamiliar words and expressions from it together.
For me, this system is fine when working with a text, but I don’t find it very helpful for learning new words. I think, what I need to do is to rearrange the words by topic later (which I almost never do). I really want to have different topics in my vocabulary notebook so that I can easily revise words later and associate them with one another. In my opinion, this system is especially good when your studies are based on a book that has units and topics that are easy to follow and make notes.
I also plan on including tables and mind maps into my vocabulary notebook. I believe visual learning is very effective for me (but again I am too lazy to spend more time on it).
And still the biggest question: What do I do with a new word if its meaning is just too general? I usually just write it down with other words of the same word-class but something in this method is stil bothering me.
Which system do you prefer? Do you organize your vocabulary notes by word-class or topic or maybe you have a combination of different systems?
