A while back, I had a strange commission request.
It was from a guy who messaged me from a burner account. He calls himself "didactys". He said he wanted an album cover, front and back, for an album he's making. "eternal sunshine of the wayward mind", that's the title. Probably a reference to the 2004 movie, Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind. I liked that movie a lot, so I was interested. We arranged the details, pricing, and all that jazz. But he never said anything about a non-disclosure agreement or any request to not post it on The Bunn Project social medias. This will be important soon. When asked for samples of the song so I can get a feel of it, he outright said no without me finishing my next sentence. Instead we had a long long talk about how he wanted the covers to appear. I could tell he wasn't a native English speaker, but he was in a way, really good at it.
He said he had Nurse Robot Type T was doing most of the vocals. So I made a sketch with her in the front cover. I made her into this "looping in the rooms" type thing which was "really representative" according to didactys. After he paid 50% of the price, I began working. two days later, I finished this:
The Front Cover
I told him I was done with the art covers and he had to pay the remaining amount so I can give it to him. But he requested me to add the names of the songs, album info, and the legal information like copyrights and stuff. Most of which I blurred out because in his own words, "it's not for you to look into".
After this, he gave me the remaining payment and I sent him the covers, along with their psd files. His last message was "this is good". I said thanks to him and to tell his friends about me, but he didn't respond. Whatever. A job's done. I hope his career goes well.
Today, I decided to look carefully at what I made. A few details stood out, namely the album's description and the copyright holder.
The copyright holder had no results when I searched it on Google. It was weird and I thought nothing much of it. Probably it's didactys' own indie label or something. Maybe it's yet to be registered, but it's strange to have a song copywritten in 2015 and not releasing it. Idk.
Then there's the description:
"a shoegaze and dream pop compilation for noise-based therapy and treatment for amalgatic cerebral [redacted by me in this post for reasons] syndrome"
I have no clue what "Noise-based therapy" is, nor what A.C.E. syndrome is. I thought it was an artistic description or a blurb, so I asked the commissioner for details. The only thing he sent me was a pdf.
The pdf was an excerpt of a recent study in a science journal. It was ran through a translator app, most likely Google Translate. The original language is overlaid with English text. A few names were covered with black bars and there were hand-written messages that say "not a valid study" and "where did you get this survey?".
I read the paper and at first, I was impressed by the style which looks like a real research paper but it's mixed in with pseudo-science. I then went to the references section and I was fascinated by the amount of real papers mentioned. Some of which include:
Personal Identity Processes from Adolescence Through the Late 20s: Age Trends, Functionality, and Depressive Symptoms
Art therapy for people with psychosis: a narrative review of the literature
Shoegaze as the third wave: affective psychedelic noise, c.
Noise, discomfort and mental health:A review of the socio-medical implications of disturbance by noise
I forgot to mention that I skipped reading the study itself and went immediately to the reference page. So when I went back to read the whole study. I admit I got bored and nearly fell a sleep a couple of times. But one word stood out: "didactys"
The dude's name came up in a scientific (mostly pseudo-science) paper. It mentions his music (labelled as "audio") as a sure way to treat A.C.E. syndrome which was never explained in the paper, at least enough for me to stop asking myself questions. At this point, I was really convinced that this is some ARG-type stuff. But this wasn't the end of it.
The test patients in the so-called "survey" had a few profiles mentioned. Names were anonymized but the profiles had a some biological info such as the weight, height, age, your standard health stuff and it also includes the supposed patient's "complaints". There's this one that was super creepy. Shared my bio info down to the blood type. And the complaint beside it was something I said back in my first year in college. Under my breath. Alone. In an empty cafeteria mid-afternoon while I was waiting for my motorcycle taxi. And it was so specific and personal that I started freaking out.
I clearly DID NOT participate in this survey. Whoever did this must've been some secret agent cuz I DO NOT remember any college survey about some pseudo-scientific study. It's clearly not my friends, not even my college classmates. I was so scared that I blocked didactys' burner account, but I'm pretty sure he can still contact me. Which scares me to this day.
And because we had no non-disclosure agreement, I can share this story here. And if didactys is reading this, dude, not cool. Thanks for requesting my services, but don't pull this crap on me again.
And about the pdf of the research paper, yeah... my dumbass deleted it alongside other files I didn't need because my PC didn't have enough space. Usually I place temporary files in my Downloads folder. It's a bad habit I had since my iMac years.
The Back Cover
I honestly don't think this will be the last time didactys will contact me, whoever he is or they are.

why are my mp3s not good enough for you, VOCALOID6 😔💔
Next week I'll post 2 different versions of a song cover (finally lol). Here's a hint for the song I'm covering: 🤍✉️
IA from Vocaloid 6
"I was a bit ambivalent on the updated outfit at first because I really miss her ultra long hair! But it's grown on me. I like that all the base components of the old outfit still feel present, but remixed"
Do you like this character design?
Yes
No

More po-iro
She ate popo's saturation
Gekiyaku from Vocaloid 6
"Love all of Gekiyaku's designs throughout her history. This is probably my favorite of the set"

I mentioned briefly a while back how I thought TAKU might be the clearest V6 silhouette vocal...
I ended up here last night-
https://www.vocaloid.com/anniversary/voicebank/
which is a comparative thing with (nearly) all the Vocaloids. Sadly they don't have asa (who I know is similarly good), or V6 IA (who I hear is good) but it really cements in my mind how he genuinely might be one of the clearest V6s IN GENERAL. Like, he's not engine noise-free but in a mix you're definitely gonna struggle to hear it.
Also dear god is there some range... I don't think I've used NAOKI much but... Oh my god.
