Totally unrelated to my blog, but I figured people on here might know. For my research I have to analyse speech variables (volume and pitch). Does anybody happen to know a reliable (preferably open source) programme for that? It's for quite big sound files and I need to be able to upload a file.

can it be an autism thing to "mumble" but not really? everyone says I mumble and I feel like I'm talking at a normal volume and people yell at me for it which makes it worse. also, do u have any tips for talking at a more appropriate volume?

This can potentially be related to a number of things, but it  is common for autistic people to be accused of mumbling or speaking too loudly or too quietly. You might try recording yourself speaking to listen to it back and see whether practising and listening to yourself helps you to speak more clearly/at a more appropriate volume. Maybe some of your friends and family could also be asked to prompt you/give you subtle signals to speak louder if necessary (in a supportive manner). Any other ideas?

Voice Volume Group Activity

Supplies: Volume cards (I created these in "Pages"), List of places/situation (I just used "Word").

Goals: I did this with a social skills group of 1st/2nd graders (2 on the autism spectrum) when I noticed that some students struggled with controlling their volume.

- Each child get 3 cards (loud, normal and quiet/soft). 

- Read off a list of different situations/locations and ask students to identify how loud it is appropriate to be by putting a card forward on the table.

I did this with a 1st/2nd grade social skills group when I noticed that this is that this was something the children with autism struggled with.
