TRC Translation Notes Volume 13 (Chapters 91 - 99 + Omake)
The wondrous third installment of the new Translation Notes from @giniroangou, now looking at Volume 13. I can’t believe how far we’ve come, this still feels so recent.
Highlights include: that’s so love, secret drugs, justice for Syaoran’s detective skills, improved Kuroparents, and cuddle pile!

There’s a tiny time jump here, so we can infer that Syaoran actually told the entire story of everything he saw from start to finish. He didn’t jump to any conclusions (he very very very much didn’t jump to conclusions) because hey, magic book, who knows? It could be anything. He didn’t say “I think I saw your past”, he said “here is a detailed summary of everything” and let Kurogane confirm or deny what it was.
But Kurogane confirms his fear that it is, indeed, his past. And Syaoran is still feeling the pain from it.
But Kurogane isn’t. There’s no remorse or shock or anger that Syaoran saw any of that. Because he’s in a much better place now, and he knows absolutely that it was an accident and any undue emotions wouldn’t help the situation. I MEAN, ok so we’re talking about Kurogane, so undue emotional outbursts probably weren’t on the table in the first place, but his attitude to the whole thing is so very calm, and reassuring, and plain. Because as much as this is about Kurogane, it’s Syaoran who is suffering right now, and he wants to mitigate that as much as possible. Because Kurogane’s suffered these exact same events (but so much worse) and he doesn’t want that same suffering for Syaoran. We’ve already seen that in action. Even though it’s not quite the same, he doesn’t want Syaoran to have the same character development that he went through
But but but. But.
Syaoran is so anguished over the idea that memories are something private. Or, more specifically, memories belong to you, the owner of said memories, and that they should not be messed with or viewed without your permission. It helps that Kurogane’s memories were an intensely private part of him, but even that aside, you could make the same argument for any memory he might have seen.
Which, a) applies perfectly to this situation, because it was terrible, and it’s not something Kurogane was willing to go around telling people about
And b) strikes right into the core of Syaoran, because he doesn’t have memories like this. He has no childhood that he recalls. It’s an important issue for him.
But also c) it tangentally touches on Sakura’s situation, who’s memories were stolen from her without her permission, and has to build her personality back up from scratch
And maybe d) relates to Syaoran in ways he doesn’t even know yet.
Because there is the faint possibility that it’s not just his memories that don’t actually belong to him.
Because he doesn’t have any. All his memories are built from the ground up from the moment he met Sakura, and that might mean his identity and existence, also, don’t actually belong to him.
But I’m just wildly guessing at this point.
EITHER WAY.
KUROGANE STRIKES RIGHT TO THE CORE OF THE ISSUE IN A SIMPLE SENTENCE GODDAMN
[1]
I know I was just showing concern over Mokona’s feelings but MOKONA OF ALL THE TIMES TO LOOK LIKE THE ENTIRE WORLD IS MADE OF CANDY FLOSS THIS MIGHT NOT BE IT
I mean sure I don’t think she has any idea what Syaoran has seen and I think she’s genuinely just that happy that Syaoran is awake but still. Still.
…but also on second thought I can think of at least a dozen times where I’ve read the mood of a room so badly that I’ve done this exact thing, SO YOU KNOW WHAT? YOU GO MOKONA. I SUPPORT YOU IN THIS.
INNAPROPRIATE SMILING HAS BEEN APPROVED.
And Syaoran might never feel joy again you know no big deal. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
There’s so much packed into this moment I am overwhelmed.
I sincerely enjoy the fact that when Syaoran says his thing we get Kurogane’s silent reaction but also Fai’s. Because there’s nothing in particular in his words that would give away exactly how serious this is, but on the other hand everything does. He was just trapped in a cursed book that Fai couldn’t free him of, while crying his eyes out, and the first thing he does when he wakes up is ask to talk with Kurogane. I don’t know how much of Kurogane’s past Fai knows, but out of all of them I’m sure Fai is most naturally attuned to the tone of tragedy and recognises it the second it leaves Syaoran’s lips.
And he’s visibly sad. Which Fai doesn’t usually let come through in the first place, which shows just how seriously he’s treating this.
But it only shows for a moment
And then he plays his usual role and feigns the naturalness that no-one believes and gives those two the privacy they need in the process.
Because that’s what he does.

THAT FUCKING SMILE THOUGH

OH
OH OH OH HERE WE GO
DOES THIS MEAN SYAORAN WAS PAYING ATTENTION
DOES HE KNOW IT WAS EVIL WOLVERINE
IS HE GOING TO TELL HIM
WILL KUROGANE’S FACELESS ASSASSIN FINALLY HAVE AN IDENTITY
HOW WILL THIS CHANGE THINGS IN HIS HEAD
ALL THIS TIME HE ONLY HAD HIS OWN FAILURE TO BLAME
BUT – ok I’m getting a bit ahead of myself here hang on let’s actually just turn the page
OK HERE WE GO
I LIVE FOR THIS SHIT
Ok is it bad that I was mentally expecting him to say “Evil Wolverine” and that, I had forgotten that not only is that not his actual name, but Syaoran doesn’t know his real name either?
It is, isn’t it.
EITHER WAY
KUROGANE KNOWS NOW
THERE’S NO TAKING THAT BACK
Last Time, on Tsubasa:
..Uhhhhh
NOTHING IN PARTICULAR HAPPENED
OH, AND A BIT MORE NOTHING.
A GREAT TIME WAS HAD BY ALL
AND NOW WE CONTINUE
