106: One-Punch Man: Volume Seven [2012]
Story by: One
Art by: Yusuke Murata
It had taken Mercury awhile to decide if he wanted to see Ozma or not. He’d gone back and forth on the matter with Emerald, and it was her finally telling him that she would take it out of his hands if he didn’t make up his mind and shut up about it.
In the end, it was Whitley excitedly telling him about Ruby’s new trick that made up his mind for him. Ruby had always carried a bitter weight of resentment for him, even before her magic had manifested; knowing that even with the barriers they’d carefully arranged for her she was still learning and growing just made that weight grow.
It wasn’t fair. Why did she get to have the love and support of her family? Why did she get to keep her magic, why did she get to learn how to use it? From a mother who understood it, understood her, made sure she was learning safely?
So he told Boyd he wanted to see Ozma about, You Know, Before, and as Pietro had already been discussing Emerald’s issues with her mental magic with him and put forward the idea of consulting him, it was arranged that they’d visit the tower together. At least having Emerald there would make a good deflection.
A good crutch, he thought in his father’s snide way, and reached for his acoustic. Another crutch, but just having it strapped to his back helped. If people got annoying, he could just walk off and find somewhere quiet to play and forget about them.
So whatever. Maybe it was a crutch. He’d used crutches before he’d adapted to his legs, too, and look how well that had turned out.
The others were already waiting when Mercury stepped out of the lift a couple minutes later. Emerald had been spending more time in the lab herself lately, especially now that Ruby was dividing her time more evenly between here and Amity. As much as she liked the freedom, she didn’t need the constant outside time that Mercury and Hazel did, and without anyone in the apartment to keep her company, the lab had become more of a place to be, even if it was just reading in a corner while Gearloose and Fenton worked.
“Are we ready to go?” he asked. “I wanna get this over with.”
