In this video from a lecture series at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory​, a scientist who studies the martian surface using orbital and rover measurements talks about the area to be studied by NASA's Perseverance Mars Rover​, including the rocks that we hope to sample with it. Then, one of the JPL engineers hops in, to talk about how they design and test a rover that will operate a full planet away with no one to repair it if things go wrong or get stuck.

These swirling clouds captured by NASA’s Terra Satellite are known as Von Karman vortices. They are created when a mass of fluid, such as water or air, encounters an obstacle and creates swirls going in alternating directions. The obstacle in this instance is Isla Socorro, a volcanic island in the Pacific Ocean. The island, which is located a few hundred kilometers off the west coast of Mexico and the southern tip of Baja California, is part of the Revillagigedo Archipelago. Now this is pretty awesome. Watch the patterns in the fog behind that building (viewed from the John Hancock Center, Chicago). You can make out a swirling, alternating vortex pattern. The fog is defining a Von Karman vortex pattern.
