My great-great grandfather, Alex Abernathy, arrived in Texas in the early/mid 1850s and lived in Davis (now Cass) County, Texas on the original Juneteenth in 1866. In 1867, he registered to vote in Davis County, Texas. Emancipation or no, this was still a provocative act. Many Black Americans faced harm and even death for attempting to exercise their right to vote, and to this day, every effort is still being made to disenfranchise Black Americans. If we can make #juneteenth a national holiday, we can even better honor the legacy of folks like my great-great granddad by passing the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act with haste. #votingrightsmatter https://www.instagram.com/p/CQQzdUxnhGN/?utm_medium=tumblr
