I'm a level 1 freshie and I jammed for the first time tonight (not in a bout or scrim, in a drill but still) and it was so scary when I was standing there, waiting for the whistle to blow, but once it started it was so exhilarating!! I got between the blockers and challenged the brace, I even won and got past them more often than not! I went up against my coach, singlehandedly the best overall player and bench coach I know, and had little to no feedback around what I needed to work on from my jam coach, the best jammer I know hands-down.

It was hard. It was so physically and mentally demanding; staying strong and pushing up against three to four other strong women while trying to hold my ground, stay on my skates/toe-stops and think of ways to get around them at the same time, but it was all so worth it when I came out ahead, literally! I haven't worked that hard for something in so long, it was so satisfying and I am so proud of myself.

I'll be moving and having to leave my league soon, but it was amazing to be able to experience that with them before I do.

I loved every second of it and it's solidified how much I want to be a jammer some day 😄 (hopefully for VRDL, but one dream at a time)

So Scald Eagle ( Rose City ), Lady Trample ( Victoria ), and Brawn Swanson ( Rose City ) are hosting a boot camp in Wichita, Kansas and I couldn't afford to go. I made a post on Facebook about it, and a skater from Nashville offered to pay for me to attend, saying the future of roller derby needed me. I said I couldn't ask her to do that. The next day one of the people who helped coach the junior Olympic team I was on contacted the hosts of the boot camp and paid for me to attend. I am honestly so lucky to have so much support in the derby community.

These legends ❤ Learning to skate with such an amazing group (not all pictured here, we are a much larger and unrulier group!) has been the highlight of my week for the last 10 weeks. Knowing that on Wednesday nights I get to strap on my skates and zoom, wobble, and stack it alongside other incredible women has gotten me through many a shitty day. And... last night I got the news that I passed my "you can skate safely" assesment and can go forth and learn CONTACT!
