The most useful thing Avid did was die. Dying killed Pyro, a man that was ascending to madness, and soon would no longer recognize himself if he looked in the mirror. Dying helped Scott Goldsmith realize he started to feel, for the first time in a thousand years. And dying helped shelby stand up for what she thought was the best she could do in the moment instead of hiding behind Fear.

I HAD A DREAM ABOUT VAMPIRE COURTING EVERYONE SHUT UP. Weirdly enough it was about Goldsmith courting Avid and that traditionally a feeding partner (when vamps are consensual feeding from other vamps) is supposed to inspect the fangs of the biting vamp, test their patience and want.

Scott was trying to be petty towards Owen for being so hostile towards keeping Avid around, so he pulled Avid closer, and he let his expression soften. Avid had a heart attack because what is that face Scott doesn't make that face- and he quietly opened his mouth and bared his teeth to the fledgling. A vampires fangs are such a staple of their lives, my dream decided it was an important part of their romancing.

Scott wasn't snarling, wasn't defensive or threatening. He was almost asking Avid if his fangs were allowed to taste him. If they were worthy. Could you imagine Scott Goldsmith asking a fledgling if he was worthy of them? Scott was doing it to piss off Owen and hurt Pyro a bit (he'd never do this for someone like Pyro, no matter how good of a dog he was for his sire), but when Avid spoke everything started to feel.... real.

"Woah... sharp and beautiful as you are, hehehe." He took Scott completely by surprise as he hooked one of his fangs with a claw. "So pretty."

Scott had to bite Avid's finger to get him to let go, to distract him until the elder vampire could regain his bearings. "I... I'll take that as a yes."

"To what-" Avid shivered as Scott tilted his chin up, trailing a hand down his shoulder.

"Hold still, Avid~"

deepdive into the emotional WRECK that is Scott Goldsmith

can we talk about the absolute whiplash scott goes through over the course of the series? at first, he obviously is more curious and amused than anything else. He decides Shelby is entertaining, and he likes her vibes, so he decides to keep her around. This kickstarts his first true emotions on the server: friendship. He begins to form a geniuine bond and starts to actually like Shelby. He sees Owen as a clueless fledgeling(which he basically was, at least compared to Scott; lets be real here), driven only by grief and vengence, not logic. Pyro, despite being his fledgeling, is seen more as a lackey; someone he wouldn't trust as far as he could throw him, more around for simple tasks and amusement. Shelby is the first person in Oakhurst that Scott regains the ability to feel things for. Then, there's Avid. Scott was shown to have a morbid fascination/curiousity about Avid; like he could tell something was off, and wanted to push his boundaries until he found out what it was. Once his illness is revealed and he's turned into a vampire, Avid clearly lets himself go a bit. Likely influenced by A. the rush of being free from his sickness for the first time in literal decades B. finally dropping his last set of walls around his heart, allowing himself to live life on the edge, rather than how he was before(paranoid, terrified, and haunted) C. likely some form of underlying mental illness/mania, maybe even just a massive influx of serotonin at A.

All of this cultivates into him being reckless, a loose canon("I can't wait to burn the town down!!!"), and a person who decides it's a great idea to kiss fucking Scott Goldsmith, noitorious Elder Vampire, serial killer, manipulative little shit extrodanaire, on the lips. Which absolutely FUCKS UP Scott's very careful emotional walls and barriers. It kicks up the butterflies in his stomach, which stopped fluttering over a millenia ago, and shows him that it really is possible. Shelby wasn't just a special case(lovely as she is). Scott Goldsmith can feel and experience the big L word: Love. And then Avid fucking dies.

When he finds out, especially when he realizes it was Pyro, he loses his shit mentally. That man is flipping tables in his brain. After that, he doesn't really have a moment to process the fact that he lost one of the only people he has felt for in years. Until the grave scene. He goes through the painfully human practice of grief: burying the body. Without a body. For all he knows, what would normally be buried is either rotting at the bottom of a hole somewhere, or already dust in the wind. He gives his speech, plants a rose, and moves on with his plans: take revenge, grab the remaining two members of his coven, and get the fuck out of Oakhurst. Everything happens: Shelby kills Pyro, Martyn, Ren, Legs, etc die. Owen dies. All of a sudden, he's flying to the nearest city, and then he's on a train to New York. It's several hours until they arrive, and Drift and Shelby seem content to whisper their pains to eachother. They hold eachother's hands and quietly mourn all that they've lost to the curse that is Oakhurst. They somehow recognize that Scott doesn't want to talk, and they leave him to stare out the window at the speeding by scenery. He finally has a moment to figure out what he's feeling. Hatred. Annoyance. Confusion. Pain. Anger. Grief. Happiness and Relief. Scott isn't good with emotions. He hasn't felt most of them since he was a fledgling! But now? He feels love. He feels love for Drift, who has been a loyal ally and friend. He feels love for Shelby, one of his first Coven members, his best friend, his roommate, his. He feels...something. For Avid. He doesn't know if it's love. He doesn't know if he loved him when he kissed him on that tower, or when he held Avid after he died for the first time as a vampire. He doesn't know if he could love the corpse that was supposed to lay under that cold, carved stone on the hill. But whatever he does feel, love or not... It hurts.
